Everton vs Manchester United

The Red Devils will play at Goodison Park for the last time ever and do we ever need to put on a performance against this lot after a series of embarrassing defeats in that is, historically, the Premier League's most imbalanced fixture.

Abdoulaye Doucouré is available again following suspension but Nathan Patterson won't be fit and Youssef Chermiti is being carefully managed after a long lay-off.

It remains to be seen who else might be at David Moyes's disposal this weekend. The boss is hopeful that Seamus Coleman will be able to play again before the end of the season as he battles an ongoing calf problem.

Let’s twat these fuckers into oblivion.

We’re ahead of them in the league. Let’s keep it that way.

We're winning this 3-1. Another brace from Beto.

Another win Saturday and we're just about there, but no switching off. Let's climb the table. We may not win every match, but we can go into every match believing we can.

Victor Jones 4

What Everton team turns up on Saturday?
The team that has the best keeper in Britain.
The solid defence of last season. With wily old Tarks back to his commanding best. With Branthwaite strutting his stuff. And with O’Brien and Myko stopping everything, and linking up with our wingers. No nonsense, no mistakes.
And how about our midfield. Winning everything, and pressing, and moving the ball quickly forwards. Playing pinpoint balls through to Beto.
Alcaraz and Doucoure and Linstrom bombing forward to support Beto.

And then there is Beto. Scoring for fun at present. That through ball has to have been worked out on the training pitch. Practise, practise and more practise. It’s starting to pay off.

Or do our players revert to the rubbish that we all know that they can be capable of. Sorry folks, but we can, at times be, to say the least, not very good. Being polite there.

So just turn up. This Utd team are there for the taking. In recent season they have scored a few screamers against us, so close them down. Give them no time or space to shoot from distance. Watch them on set pieces, they tend to be dangerous with them. They haven’t recently been scoring much from open play. In fact, they are awful. So just turn up. We can beat them.

Just a last point, great win against Palace, last week. But we did get a tad lucky. That’s football. I’d take all the luck that we can get. Wasn’t there an old saying that the more that we practise, the luckier we get. Long may our luck last. Our new found luck.

As always I’m nervous when match day comes around. So a quick goal, followed by a second goal will help matters greatly. Stating the obvious here.
And Beto to carry on his recent spell of good form.
This Utd team are awful, so we need to get stuck into them. No excuses, we can win this. A goal in each half. And a clean sheet. 2-0 to us. Up the Toffees.

Victor Jones - What Everton team turns up on Saturday?

I think Victor the team of the last four weeks or so and I see absolutely no reason for your opening sentence/question based on those last four weeks or so.

Paul Conway 6
21/02/2025 at 08:00:12

Barring a freak injury, Alcaraz has got to start.
keep on keeping on.

Victor Jones 7
21/02/2025 at 08:10:16

Of course I want Everton to turn up. I want Everton to play attacking football. Take their chances. Score goals. Be solid in defence. Keep a clean sheet. And beat this Man Utd outfit.
Isn’t that what every supporter of every football team in the country expects their team to do. Turn up. No lethargic start. Get at them from the off.

And yes, it’s been great winning a few matches, and picking up points in the past 4 weeks. It’s been great seeing our team pull clear from the relegation zone.
But, turn up like we did against Bournemouth in recent weeks.
Or turn up like we did at Old Trafford earlier in the season, and we ain’t winning anything tomorrow. Nothing guaranteed.
And there, for me is the crux of the matter. The rubbish that has gone on before Moyes came back. The rubbish of the last few seasons. Most supporters still feel anxious, even when we are leading 2-0. Get the whistle blew for full time.
So the last 4 weeks have been mainly great. But we ain’t there yet. But we are getting there. We are getting there.

Danny ONeill 8

I don't think we were lucky against Palace Victor.

Yes, a shaky start, but we held out and took the lead. We improved as the game went on as we withheld everything they through at us, through resilience and resolute defending. Talk about the words from the song: "we shall not be moved". Players running themselves into the ground.

A moment of class and calm head from Charly as players and supporters were still screaming for a penalty.

More of the same tomorrow will do me to send another team home licking their wounds after their last encounter at Goodison.

Sean Mitchell 9
21/02/2025 at 12:23:48

Let’s play them with the same commitment and intensity as against the gobshites.

Our record against united is shocking.

Make the last game at Goodison a win.

It won’t be easy, the ref will probably give them everything as well.
They still have some very good players.

The crowd would frighten anyone because we’re the best.

Well it looks like the team choice for Saturday boils down to Doucoure or Alcaraz starting. Personally I'd stick with the same starting 11 as against Palace

Paul Ferry 11
21/02/2025 at 17:05:38

Victor (7): all those matches you mention were under Dyche. "Winning a few matches". Why does that sound a tadd derisory? We have the best recent form in the PL Victor. There is zero reason for the tone and content of your posts. Why don't you simply say in a couple of sentences there are never guarantees.

Duncan Lennard 12
21/02/2025 at 18:25:57

Victor (4). We had 13 fit senior players. Even accounting for Doucoure’s suspension, I’d say luck is relative.

Peter Moore 13
21/02/2025 at 21:56:01

Come on you blue boys! Let's make history and attract new players by swatting them 7 nil!
Dreams can come true, can't they?!

Dale Self 14
22/02/2025 at 02:09:23

Peter, that is not gibberish. Just get those first three past Onana and then let Charly knock a couple in from outside the box. Top it off with a couple of OGs. Ta Da!

The gentleman's pat on the back for Amorim at full time and the humiliation is complete. 4:30 kickoff is too early to drink so I've started now. I hope the Ushited fans are bitter beyond the Lagunitas Maximus I'm having.

UTOFM!

This will be a real milestone because pre-Moyes they would have beat us 99 tomes out of 100. Today? we could and should win because they have serious weaknesses.

Paul Ferry 16
22/02/2025 at 06:23:40

90/100 Martin. We'll win in 6 hours. Crap, I'm still up, basking in the news with wine that we are apparently playing West Ham in Chicago in the end of July. Alcaraz please; not Doucoure. Same team as last week. 3-1.

Si Cooper 17
22/02/2025 at 09:16:46

Paul F, I think Victor had a right to ask that question given our very poor performance in the previous meeting.
Even under Dyche, even this season, it was a very weird performance where far too many players fluffed their lines. It was like the players defeated themselves with United barely having to make an effort.
So does that curious fragility linger? Will the players suddenly look like a bunch of strangers again?
Or is the self belief they have found sufficient for them to take that smouldering ember of embarrassment from that apparent mis-match and use it to light an inner fire that will stoke them up and have them steaming to a convincing victory?
Like Victor and yourself I feel we have grounds for optimism but today I think we get a proper look at our guys’ mental fortitude as much as anything.
So it’s keep the good vibes flowing and come on you ‘very Zen’ blue boys!

Si Cooper 18
22/02/2025 at 09:27:47

Martin (15), is that pre present-Moyes but not pre past-Moyes? Or should that be post past-Moyes but pre present-Moyes?
Because if you go too far pre past-Moyes you will find purple patches where United were simply another bunch of chancers who were only likely to get a good hiding.

Looks like we have a new negative Victor! Welcome to Evertonia Victor, we love a bit of banter with a negative guy! We know you love Everton, but keep playing the devil's advocate and we'll appreciate you more. Everyone's been far too positive recently! :)

Andy M 20
22/02/2025 at 11:03:57

Don't spoil it John! I was enjoying being positive for a moment there:)
Always love to beat a team in red, especially now at Goodison.
Utd are vulnerable just now, confidence is low, and we know how that feels, show no mercy blues!

Edward Rogers 21
22/02/2025 at 11:38:09

Think we're all being a bit harsh on Victor, surely he's only saying as he sees it. I certainly don't get overly " negative vibes" at all.

Victor Jones 22
22/02/2025 at 11:40:56

Me ! Negative. No way. Sorry if my comments come across as negative, I’m not really aiming at that. I’m not aiming at anything. Just giving my views on what I think about Everton. Good and bad.
When it comes to Everton, I want them to win everything. Be competitive. Win every match.

But as I am always reminded of on almost every conversation about Everton, we have won nothing for 30 years. That’s not me being negative, that’s fact.
The last 4 weeks ain’t making up for that fact. We have won nothing.
So no folks, I’m not negative.
Cautious, yes. Always cautious, until we hit the back of the onion net, get a lead, and the ref blows for full time.
FFS, punters on these websites have stated that they can’t relax, even if we go 2 goals up. Is that being negative? Or just cautious.

The last 4 weeks have actually been great. 4 wins and that draw in our last derby at Goodison. And long may all that continue. As I’ve stated, I want Everton to win everything.

But, remember last season, when we won 4 on the bounce under Dyche, after not winning for, was it 13 matches. Those 4 wins made us safe, then we did nothing for the remainder of the season. We reverted to type.
Best not to get carried away with this bunch of players. One match at a time. Caution.

So this little run is great, and it’s looking more like we are now safe, but let’s just be cautious. False dawns, it’s the hope that kills you, and all that jazz.
I have, we all have, seen all this before.

I’ve also read this Mr Ferry nonsense before. Not a problem. Does he really have to challenge every wee comment, stroke and dot, posted by wafflers like myself. It’s just a football forum folks. Just a wee bit of fun.

Sorry for being a wee bit cautious about playing Man Utd. But win or lose, we all move on to next week. It’s Brentford. They had a decent win last night, but we will beat them, easy peasy.
So there we are, and not a negative thought in sight.
Have a good day folks. Up the Toffees.
Ps. Beto to score today.

Wee agree, Victor 😉

Victor Jones 24
22/02/2025 at 12:16:04

Just a last comment. Slightly of topic. But there you are.
Just had a wee punt on two matches for today. Everton to beat Man Utd. And Ireland to beat Wales. That’s my double.

With the surname Jones, I’m actually Irish. Standing joke a few years back, I worked with a Welsh guy called Kelly. Also an Everton supporter.

Anyhow, it’s Ireland to thump Wales. Although Wales now have a new coach, so I’m expecting them to be tightened up a wee bit.
And Everton, under our new coach, let’s just beat Utd.
Get in. Up the Toffees.

John Hall 25
22/02/2025 at 12:26:08

Glad to hear you're not too negative Victor. However, a bit of negativity is always helpful to bring us back to reality sometimes! Enjoy the game! UTFT!

Dale Self 26
22/02/2025 at 12:55:03

Get in. Beto with an assist from Doucoure. Table looks good by the way.

Dale Self 27
22/02/2025 at 13:06:45

It's on Peter, it is on. Duke with more good work in the box, 2-0.

Victor Jones 28
22/02/2025 at 13:16:58

And there’s me with my negative thinking. Slap on wrist time.

There’s that fast start that I was hoping for. Nothing lethargic like last week. Let’s keep this going.
And Beto scores. It’s looking good folks. It’s looking good.

Paul Conway 29
22/02/2025 at 13:28:53

I know it’s only a matter of opinion, but I can’t help thinking, that Guye is having his best ever Season with us.

Si Cooper 30
22/02/2025 at 13:31:38

Near perfect half.
Only one thing bothers me. Jake O’Brien’s very harsh yellow.
Dorgu’s their main threat. United will surely be looking to get it to him as much as possible and the ref is so trigger happy it will be one wrong move and we will be down to 10. Hopefully we will get third and kill the game off before they get into their stride second half.

Mick Davies 31
22/02/2025 at 13:33:48

A clean sheet and we're clear of any relegation worries. This is the team that looked finished just a couple of months ago. Well done Moysie, he's certainly learned a lot since his last stint here

Victor Jones 32
22/02/2025 at 13:42:42

Wee wee monsieur Donal. Wee wee.

Mick Davies 33

Lets hope Young doesn't help his old club out with one of his silly challenges in the box

Mick Davies 34
22/02/2025 at 14:43:00

If it wasn't a penalty, then why wasn't Young sent off for diving?

David Chappell 35

Well how Bent was that decision

Andrew Williamson 36
22/02/2025 at 14:55:38

Really dislike TNT coverage. Its 2.55pm interviews with the Rat and the ManU manager nothing from Everton as yet

Si Cooper 37
22/02/2025 at 14:56:35

Absolutely disgusting! They had 12 for most of the match anyway and when the referee finally got one right and awarded a clear penalty the VAR stitched us up and the ref remembered who he was supposed to be helping!
Whole thing made worse by the self proclaimed ‘neutral’ commentator having an orgasm whenever United got anywhere near our box. Not a peep about Maguire not getting a yellow for the worst foul of the game, or blatantly diving twice in the area.
They went to Rio Ferdinand for a comment and both he and the commentator studiously avoided saying anything about the replay of a ‘foul’ on Garnacho which clearly showed Tarks getting the ball cleanly, being at least 2 foot away from actually touching Garnacho.
They also characterised the game as a classic game of two halves with United apparently rampaging in the second half.
In the game I saw, two nil to us after first half was the absolute minimum we deserved and the second half was pretty even apart from them getting a couple, and their ability to keep any pressure on us was clearly aided by them getting all the 50/50 decisions and plenty that were 60/40 for us as well.
Amorin saying the penalty was soft… but that isn’t the point is it Rubin. VAR is only supposed to point out clear and obvious mistakes and a penalty being soft does not fit that criteria.
It’s clear that de Ligt grabbed Young’s shirt twice and Maguire crooked his forearm around his midriff. All three bites were enough to stall his efforts to get to the ball. So what if he didn’t fight maniacally to keep going? You don’t need to. McCoist said penalty, Rio said penalty. Let’s see what PGMOL and ratty Mike Dean say to excuse this absolute shitshow by the officials.

Mick Davies 38
22/02/2025 at 15:05:02

I don't really understand what VAR is actually all about: it was supposedly brought in to clear up 'obvious' mistakes, but there was NO obvious mistake there. Not only one but two defenders impeded Youngs forward momentum. The VAR explanation was that Maguire didn't foul him, but didn't mention DeLigt. It's complete bias and there's no doubt about it, worst thing ever brought into football

Si Cooper 39
22/02/2025 at 15:05:25

Mick Davies(33), that’s a rank comment unless you believe Ashley Young might be still loyal to his ‘old club’. I don't see that suggested of most players when they are up against former clubs.
So now shirt pulling is not a free kick? Let’s see how many free kicks are given for momentary snatches of shirts just this weekend. It’s even a ‘foul’ in rugby if it happens off the ball. It’s even a is clearly some sort of hindrance to Ashley Young even if the falling to the floor is over-egging it.

Si Cooper 40
22/02/2025 at 15:12:27

When they asked Maddeley to go to the monitor they repeatedly played the angle where you can’t see de Ligt’s shirt pulling until he caved. McCoist was saying, why aren’t they showing the other, better view? If that isn’t deemed to be the VAR guy clearly demonstrating bias we may as well give up now.

Mick Davies 41
22/02/2025 at 15:14:02

Si, where did I say Young 'might be loyal to his old club?' What I said was incidental, and I was alluding to his previous history of giving away penalties.

Sid Fishes 42
22/02/2025 at 15:41:23

Just seen a replay of the pen. I was amazed when it was called for a VAR check but absolutely confident the ref’s decision would be upheld. I can only think the VAR ref was pissed or just watched Young go to ground and not the two incidents of impeding his progress. I’m baffled - if this isn’t a pen - what is?

That said, we threw that away by not keeping our foot on their necks and turning the overwhelming superiority in the first half into more goals - we stood off them and let them play.

This is perhaps the worst Manchester United team I’ve ever seen - but they should have been trampled into the dust by minute 45.

Phil Grayston 43
22/02/2025 at 16:50:45

Sid Fishes: I've enjoyed and agreed with your comments in The Guardian for several years, and I'm not going to break that habit now.

The exasperation of watching us let 2 points slip against this excuse for a top club was only compounded by another blatant example of how VAR is manipulated to produce outcomes which favour TV drama, global football brands, and the TV pundits club.

I'm shocked again, but not stunned- such incidents happen too often for that.

Sid Fishes 44
22/02/2025 at 20:00:33

Thanks for the kind words Phil. I left The Guardian site because of the disgraceful way they covered the FFP points deductions. I predicted that Manchester City would never see a sanction - so far they haven’t

John Reynolds 45
22/02/2025 at 21:09:40

Daylight Robbery. I don’t subscribe to ‘all the refs are out to get us’ conspiracy theories but that VAR review was a disgrace. They had no business getting involved and recommending Madley look again in the first place and they should at least have shown him the full incident from all angles. Apart from that it was a classic game of two halves. Garnacho changed the game. Picks didn’t cover himself in glory for either of the goals.

It’s still pretty rosy in the garden though.

Phil Grayston 46
23/02/2025 at 08:29:51

An understandable decision, Sid. I stopped listening to the paper's football podcast because of the sycophantic fawning to the 'the Sky 6' and a mystifying dislike for Everton. Their coverage of several key issues beyond football is more than questionable, too, but I don't want to bring politics into this very promising Everton platform.

In any case, the Guardian's loss is Evertonia's gain.

Mark Murphy 47
24/02/2025 at 08:17:57

On the VAR I can only assume that they thought, or Madely told them, that the penalty was given for a foul by McGuire. So they examined that and found none. I don’t think they even looked at the shirt pulling.
It would’ve been interesting, IF that’s the case, if VAR would’ve intervened if Madely had NOT given a penalty.

Duncan Lennard 48
24/02/2025 at 22:14:37

It seems to me that the fundamental problem with VAR is it is used to see if the referee was wrong. We’d have had more chance getting that pen if the ref had waved it away. Then VAR would have looked and probably said ‘hang on, I think you’ve missed a shirt tug there…’ and showed him the shirt tug angle. Good tech, crappily applied.

Edward Rogers 49
25/02/2025 at 09:49:14

Mark, I think you know the answer to that one.
