David, as well as “Joe, Joe, Mexico” there was “Send our team to Mexico, hallelujah”, which could have happened as we had signed Keith Newton by the end of the season.
I’ve often wondered how we would have got on against West Germany (we would certainly have held on to a 2-0 lead), and then we would have cruised past no-marks like Gerson, Rivelino, Jairzinho, Alberto and Pelé in the Aztec Stadium!

Peter, that idea of the 69/70 Championship winning Everton team representing England, at the Mexico World Cup for some reason never went through my mind but now you mention it...it seems an obvious conclusion to make. Like you I doubt we would have thrown away a 2 goal lead against Germany - Brazil that's another story - for that game we may have had to squeeze Gordon Banks and Bobby Moore into the team!
I don't know whether you have read it but there is a superb article on the archive Evertonia section by Paul McParlan 'Seven Days that Destroyed a Decade'. For me the quick demise of such a brilliant team was a shattering blow and this article explains in detail the reasons behind that.
