Everton's pre-season tour of the United States started in disappointing fashion as David Moyes's under-manned outfit went down 3-0 to Bournemouth at Metlife Stadium.

The Cherries were a painful thorn in the Toffees' side last season, winning all three of the contests between the two teams, including the harrowing fixture at Goodison Park when Everton threw away a 2-0 lead in stoppage time and lost 3-2.

The stakes were essentially meaningless this time in this Premier League Summer Series opener but there was a gulf in terms of squad depth that told in no uncertain terms in the second half.

The Blues had enjoyed much the better of the first period with Iliman Ndiaye, Carlos Alcaraz and Beto going close to scoring and Moyes's men were coping defensively despite Nathan Patterson having to operate as an emergency centre-half alongside Jake O'Brien as Michael Keane continues to nurse a knock.

However, as Andoni Iraola was able to make a raft of changes after the break and make adjustments to deal with Everton's attacking strategy, Bournemouth took control of the game.

Philip Billing curled home an excellent shot before a pair of howlers from the Blues' centre-backs put the game to bed.

Patterson controlled a loose ball in his own box but merely put it on a plate for Dango Outtara to rap home from the angle before O'Brien's abysmal backpass was seized upon by Daniel Adu-Adjei who slotted past the stranded Jordan Pickford.

Everton: Pickford, Garner, Patterson, O'Brien, Mykolenko, Gueye (Onyango 82'), Iroegbunam (Armstrong 75'), Alcaraz, Ndiaye (Chermiti 75'), Beto (Barry 75').

Subs not used: Travers, Tyrer, Clarke, Heath, Thomas.
