Patched-up Blues craft superb victory at the City Ground
Nottingham Forest 0 – 2 Everton
James Garner tormented his former club with an imperious performance, scoring the first goal and laying on the second with a sublime pass as Everton's threadbare squad ended 2025 on a high
If it felt as though the team was down to the bare bones against Burnley on Saturday, there would be sobering news when the team sheets were announced ahead of this evening’s clash with Nottingham Forest. Charly Alcaraz and Michael Keane’s names were added to a lengthy list of absentees after picking up injuries either during or in the time since the goalless draw at Turf Moor and, looking at the patched-up side David Moyes was forced to put out at the City Ground, most Evertonians would have gladly taken another away point if offered it before kick-off.
That Everton not only came away from the East Midlands with a positive result but took all three points was remarkable given the paltry resources at the manager’s disposal. Yes, it required a performance that was backs-to-the-wall for much of the night but thanks to a gritty showing from pretty much every player in Blue, two fine goals and an imperious display by James Garner, the Toffees completed an impressive league double over former boss, Sean Dyche.
The handsome 3-0 victory over Forest at Bramley-Moore Dock 24 days ago was, arguably, the most complete performance of the season thus far but it was secured with the likes of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Iliman Ndiaye and Jack Grealish in the side. Tonight, with the former two absent along with Keane, Alcaraz, Idrissa Gueye, Jarrad Branthwaite and Seamus Coleman, and Grealish only well enough to make the bench, the manager was forced to call up two more players from the Under-21s in the form of Callum Bates and Braiden Graham to round his list of substitutes.
In the emergency, Nathan Patterson and Merlin Röhl were drafted in for their first starts at right-back and centre-midfield respectively while Jake O’Brien reprised the central-defensive role he enjoyed in the win over Bournemouth at the beginning of the month.
Meanwhile, Thierno Barry was reinstated up front in place of Beto and, having finally opened his account for the club against these same opponents, he found the net again with a terrific striker’s finish that proved to be decisive against a Dyche outfit that huffed, puffed and assailed the Blues’ box with a barrage of crosses but ultimately failed to find a way past Jordan Pickford.
There was a couple of close calls in the second half — Igor Jesus almost capitalised on an awful mixup in Everton’s six-yard box on the hour mark and substitute Dilane Bakwa went very close to halving the home team’s deficit three minutes from the end of the regulation 90 — but despite ceding the bulk of the possession, territory and shots, the Toffees always felt fairly comfortable, especially at 2-0.
They were 1-0 up with less than 20 minutes gone in the first period, scoring with what was only the second clear real chance of the game. James Tarkowski had put an early opportunity into John Victor’s arms following a short corner but a lovely move eventually unpicked Dyche’s defence.
It was started by Garner’s curled pass down the touchline for Barry and ended by the No 37 once Tim Iroegbunam had smartly wrestled himself clear of the attentions of Nicolás Domínguez and, passed infield to Dwight McNeil who, in turn, played Garner in with a slide-rule pass.
The former Forest loanee let the ball run past him before rapping it across the keeper and into the far corner without needing to look up. It was only Garner’s third Premier League goal but it set Everton on their way to a fine victory.
As Forest tried to respond, Callum Hudson-Odoi should have done better when he ghosted in behind Patterson and Tyler Dibling but could only scuff a shot towards the side-netting, Jesus planted a header straight at Pickford, and it wasn’t until the 44th minute that Oleksandr Zinchenko finally forced the England goalie into action with a direct free-kick attempt that was effortlessly pushed over for a corner.
Clearly under directions from Dyche to up their game after the interval, the hosts enjoyed a 20-minute spell of dominance to begin the second half that made for uncomfortable viewing from the Evertonian perspective yet Moyes’s men repelled everything that was thrown at them, including a succession of corners.
Douglas Luiz, a half-time introduction in place of Dominguez, raked an accurate but relatively harmless shot at Pickford after 55 minutes but Forest really should have pounced when O’Brien’s attempted clearance hit Garner in his own box and bounced to Jesus, Iroegbunam failed to steal it off the striker and the Brazilian could only prod inches wide of goal from around 12 yards out.
Morgan Gibbs-White glanced a free header well off target in the 66th minute before the contest really started to open up and Everton, who had soaked up an inordinate amount of pressure, began getting opportunities of their own on the counter-attack.
Barry led the first, picking Röhl out with a threaded pass between retreating defenders but the increasingly fatigued German ended up running into a cul-de-sac and was dispossessed.
On the second breakaway, it was Iroegbunam for whom the cogs seem to seize up following a lung-busting run and he eschewed a shot from the edge of the box and was also dispossessed.
Tarkowski really should have doubled the lead after Garner’s dreadful corner came back to him and he swung a cross to the back post where the defender nodded the wrong side of the post with the goal beckoning. And Garner himself came close to bagging again after Grealish had been introduced for Patterson when he smashed a shot across goal after a McNeil shot had been blocked.
But the killer goal did finally arrive when an Everton counter-attack paid dividends in style. This time, Garner and McNeil joined forces to rob Douglas Luiz of the ball deep in the Blues’ half before the latter slid it out to Barry in the centre-circle.
The Frenchman quickly spotted Garner’s run into space down the left channel and found him with an accurate pass. Garner looked initially to have been held up by Murillo but he neatly side-stepped the defender with a deft touch and picked Barry out with a perfectly-weighted ball that the striker controlled as he bore down on goal before slotting it wide of Victor and in.
Pickford made an unconventional block to deny Gibbs-White from close range as Forest pushed in vain for a route back into the match and then parried a Neco Williams drive away to safety but only Bakwa came close when he hammered a shot across the face of goal, just missing both the far post and Gibbs-White’s lunge.
The margin and nature of this win, Everton’s first since the reverse fixture on the 6th of December, seemed inconceivable before kick-off in the context of the Blues’ rather ineffective display against Burnley three days ago and the further depletion of Moyes’s threadbare squad.
Yet, in keeping with the canny Scot’s ability to produce results in the face of adversity, Everton’s players dug deep and found inspiration where Dyche’s charges could not. Back on his old stomping ground, Garner was magnificent but his efforts were supported by a terrific rearguard action by the likes of Tarkowski, O’Brien and Vitalii Mykolenko, the ever-improving Iroegbunam alongside him in midfield and laudable showings by McNeil and Dibling on the flanks.
The victory lifts the Toffees back into eighth place (at least until the likes of Tottenham, Fulham and Crystal Palace play on New Year’s Day) but it will have injected huge confidence into the squad that they can navigate this testing period without some of their biggest stars and most creative outlets for the next few weeks… assuming, of course, the glut of injuries doesn’t somehow get worse!

I was expecting a draw last night, so was delighted to see the boys come away with all three points.
The way the game played out suited us down to the ground. O'Brien looks much happier at center half. Him and Tarkowski must have dealt with something like forty crosses between them. Tarks has been creaking for some time, but when the game is played like that he defends his six yard box with the very best of them.
Lots of character elswhere too. I though Iroegbunam stuck to the tasks really well and Barry kept going, refusing to fold under the immense the pressure of not scoring (How lovely was it to see him smile again).Jimmy Garner really stepped up in the absence of our superior players. Silky Dibling seemed to get a greater understanding of what else is demanded of him as the game went on. M'Neil also remembered his duties which help Mykolenko no end.
I think Rohl and Patterson deserve special mention too. Both started the game looking like players who havent played - Patterson in particular was having a nightmare, but they both clawed their way into the match to make Valuable contributions.
I'm still buzzing
BTW; Is Rohl the answer to the right back conundrum ? I wouldnt be surprised to see Moyes take another look at that.

Well, what a belated Christmas Pressie and 3 points made it complete.
Garner is immense and is our Standout player.
He simply has to be cosseted and given an improved contract.
Rohl played like the player I expected, when he first started.
I thought he had an air of Fellaini about him then and his movement on and off the Ball, shows that there is an intelligent player in there.
Patterson played well, along with Dibbling, who is starting to show a lot more confidence, given game time.
Everyone was in Harmony and even Tarks can be forgiven, for that glaring miss, with his Bonce, that normally he would have put away.
Fantastic to see Barry showing such composure in front of goal.
An excellent post match interview with Barry and Garner, where they were Both Beaming.. The Missus thinks its down to his new Hair-do!.. shes an Island Girl.. they are very Superstitious !

As I have said several times already, thank you David Moyes.
He can be stubborn and frustrating sometimes, but he often finds a way to fashion a team and get a result.
Fabulous result, with lots of positives in performance of several individuals, who have had justifiable criticism, and some who have not had many opportunities to impress.

Well if wed have been offered 4 points and 2 clean sheets before the Burnley game for our next 2 games, everyone wouldve bitten the hand off whoever offered it, especially with our current squad.
The bench has been down to basically 2 usable subs for both games, but somehow weve come through the festive period with a decent return and moved up the table, well done everyone involved including our brilliant support.
Happy New Year to blues everywhere.

Fantastic result
I thought it showed our squad depth and how well we can play when players are in their preferred positions

Happy New Year all. Let's just sit back with a big smug smile, to end the year nicely. But wouldn't it be even better if we made it into Europe next year, here's hoping.

Watched the game on TV, and what a performance from James Garner, quite the best performance from one of our players for a very long time. In truth Forest rather played to our strengths and their numerous crosses into our box were comfortably dealt with.
But it is the emergence of both Iroeghunam and Rohl which is potentially very exciting. I like the look of Rohl even though we have only seen him in brief snatches, but last night even though he is clearly short of match fitness, he looked good in the two positions he played.
I also think the players showed Jack Grealish just what is needed to play in a Moyes Everton team, truth was last night we largely managed without him. Clearly he is a great talent, and I have enjoyed watching him, but it's truly wonderful to see lesser players giving their all and Jack will have to remember if he wants to play in our team we need and expect 100 % commitment.
31/12/2025 12:32:06
I think more than anything else Dibling showed that we will be ok if we don't sign Grealish. The lad isn't rushed into passing, control and shields the ball well and worked his socks off helping out Patterson.
Save the club 50m plus 200k a week and give Dibling an extended run in the team whilst Grealish sobers up!

Id have settled for a point Darren, because if Im being honest I wasnt expecting anything.
This changed once the game started, because even though it was worrying watching Patterson, slipping over a few times early in the game, you could see a lot more intent in our play.
A great victory, and even more proof, although I doubt any is really needed, that professional football, is no longer just a team game, because its all about the squad nowadays, especially for any club that wants to try and become successful.
The most pleasing thing was obviously getting the three point, but I thought the most pleasing thing when I was watching the game, was that it looked like we played with a lot more collective spirit.
31/12/2025 13:39:57
It was another great trip to the City Ground which has been kind to us since Forests return to the Premier League. A yield of ten points from four visits has made it a happy hunting ground even in our darkest days. As Darren at (2) notes, the game panned out in a way which suited the team we had available.
Having capped a positive start with Garners brilliant goal from a fine assist by McNeil we needed to be strong defensively for the twenty minutes either side of the interval. Forest are never comfortable having the majority of possession with the onus on them to find a way through a well organised defence. By and large our back eight kept their attackers in front of them so that Hutchinson and Hudson-Odoi were reduced to delivering a series of hopeful crosses which were meat and drink to OBrien and Tarkowski.
Having weathered the pressure up to the hour mark we found ourselves with more counterattacking opportunities as Forest ran out of ideas up front and began to look ragged in midfield. Bearing in mind how highly rated Gibbs-White and Anderson are in terms of English international midfielders Garners terrific performance last night left them looking second best. His turn away from Murillo and the quick through ball to Barry for the second goal was a moment of pure quality.
Having suffered back injuries in two of his first three seasons with us Garner has really stepped up a level this season. He is imposing himself on games in a way which he has not done before. Last nights performance was his best yet.
31/12/2025 14:10:46
The mood in a Nottingham bar pre-match was not optimistic. This changed as the team news came through - the initial dismay turned into one of “Well win this”.
It looked like the players came out in a similar mood. There were a few shaky moments in the first quarter of an hour, but the goal gave everyone a huge lift.
Weve seen previously that David Moyes can drag a victory out of such circumstances. Wouldnt it be great if he could imbue such a mentality into having a serious go at winning the FA Cup? 6 games is all it takes, David.
31/12/2025 14:22:16
Couldnt agree more John.
Jimmy Garner goes from strength to strength. He such an intelligent player.
I know Moyes has said he isn't worried about his contract situation, but I am. I believe Garner to be crucial to any notions of us becoming a competitive force again.
The sooner we get him to sign a new, improved, contract, the better for all concerned
31/12/2025 14:23:34
David Moyes got the setup and strategic approach absolutely spot on last night so he deserves a lot of credit for that,
He really is a master at getting results and performances out of a razor thin squad its quite remarkable really how he does it, he knows our club better than anyone and although he frustrates me at times with his lack of innovation and plan b you could say, I wouldnt want anyone else as manager at this moment in time, hes definitely underappreciated I feel.
Jimmy Garner is playing out of his skin right now and as I first thought he may be improving, such a great pro. Man of the match performance.
Jake O Brien is something to behold at centre half, could be a top player for us for a long time to come, Tarkowski was back to his best, they mopped up forests crosses all night long with ease and never looked like making a mistake, Our defence is much better with Jake at centre back.
Nice to see Barry score, hopefully hell be more confident, Im just not convinced his the answer to our problems upfront he didnt play particularly well and needs to do a lot more, he doesnt use his frame to his advantage enough and his first touch is terrible, Id like for us to sign a striker with a good first touch and is good in the air, albeit a striker of that description may be hard to find.
Well done Moyes and all the players, everyone played well and did their bit, keep it going.
31/12/2025 14:34:52
Important that we score first. And as we know, it's important to score against a Dyche team first.
Garner rightly gets credit for a fabulous performance. Hats off to Moyes for keeping him where he's most effective. Rohl isn't used to the pace of the English game yet, and he was clearly unfit, but he stuck at it in two different positions. Patterson clearly lacked match fitness, and grew into the game. We played further up the pitch as a result of him being there. He'll always leave gaps defensively, but it's a good trade-off for me.
Sometimes adversity brings managers some luck/reality. Has Moyes finally realised that O'Brien is a better centre half than right back, with Rohl filling in at right back? And that the engine room in midfield should be Garner + another?
All in all, a cracking display by manager and players. Remember we're an inconsistent midtable team, so who knows what will follow on Sunday?
I'm optimistic for 2026 after this year's upturn. Slow, steady progress is what this club needed. That's what it's getting. Happy New Year to one and all!
31/12/2025 14:43:06
Great result against the odds.
James Garner….next seasons captain?
31/12/2025 14:50:42
Havent had the chance to see the full game yet - the Patterson vs Röhl right back position is intriguing me - was Patterson getting skinned a bit to start with? Was Röhl quicker than him at closing down Forests wingers? Id love Patterson to finally come good, I never thought Röhl would end up as RB, although I think he did a spell there back in Germany.
31/12/2025 16:05:35
Let's see more of Röhl at RB. Patterson looked shaky, and if Keane is out then O'Brien is at CB where he should be anyway. With their ages, either one of Keane or Tarkowski could enter a rapid decline at any time. We want O'Brien there ready to partner with a fully fit Branthwaite. O'Brien has taken on the RB role manfully when called upon, but as with Garner, he is excellent in his proper position and will only take being played out of position so much if other clubs come calling with assurances of being played in his preferred position.
Funny thing is though, since Keane is such a confidence player, if O'Brien weren't playing RB so much and was in a rotation with Keane, Keane would probably not have played nearly as well as he has this season with his starting place assured. Regardless, if Röhl and/or Patterson can keep O'Brien away from RB for the rest of the season, we can find a permanent solution in the summer.
I would prefer not to spend on anything in January unless the right striker comes along. I also think finishing too high this season would end up being an overall negative because unless there are six new signings in the summer a European campaign would destroy this squad. It feels odd to say, of course, and obviously I will be rooting for three points every match. My point is without the proper squad depth a European spot can hurt you in the league. We should be wary of taking on too much too soon, but if Europe comes I won't be sad about it!
I looked up Garner and saw he is originally from Merseyside. I didn't know that. I'm American, so maybe I wouldn't. Are people from Birkenhead considered scouse? Was he a childhood blue? Surely not a red??? Either way, sign him up.
31/12/2025 16:41:53
I have to applaud everyone in and around the Everton squad for last nights performance, my pre match nerves twitched when I saw the team sheet.
Garner was on the money, again, mr consistent and the stand out player on the park.
I do not understand why his contract wasnt sorted out in the autumn.
Tim and Merlin are developing well as squad players, Tyler too, all need game time to show their worth, maybe afcons blessing in disguise..
I don't quite see Patterson in the same way, hes had plenty of time to show what he offers, and he falls short every time, so he was a make weight last night as the need was great.
The other defenders were great last night, apart from that one brief blip!
Barry is still struggling, but did finish well to give us a cushion, so happy with that.
Mcneil was ok, but when Jack came on we just seemed more settled and managed the game better.
The 3 pts made it a great year end result, for us and the manager, not so for the guy in the other dug out...happy blue year all :)
31/12/2025 17:31:09
Terrific performance, Moyes needs to keep Tarky and O'brien together as we look stronger there and 2 clean sheets in Bournemouth and Forest away. O'brien and Garner should not be used at right back anymore, Garner is our best central midfield player. Paterson did pretty well after a shaky start and deserves another chance on Saturday.
Ambition for 2026- A top 8 League position and FA Cup Winners !!
I hope this ambition is matched by our new owners because it should be!! The fans demand a Trophy in 2026!
31/12/2025 19:27:47
Birkenhead is a heady mix of Wools and Scouse Weston, I suspect though that Garner is more wool given his previous United links.
31/12/2025 19:41:16
Fantastic result and Ive got to say not one I was expecting when the team was announced. But as others have said, Moyes is at his best when we are down to the bare bones.
What Im hoping for now is that the fringe players have gained more confidence and perhaps more importantly Moyes will have more confidence in them and use them more often.
Garner was superb last night and is leading the way as player of the season at the half way mark.
On a slightly separate note, I will never understand why players dont celebrate when they score against a previous club.
Kiefer Moore scored for Wrexham against his former club the other night and couldnt have been more delighted.
Garner was only on loan at Forest for goodness sake, I doubt the Forest fans would have cared.
31/12/2025 19:56:46
Thanks, Kevin. Despite having been to England four times (I have siblings who moved there, and an ex-gf who also had a sibling move there), I have sadly never been to Merseyside. It's just never worked out. So no Goodison or HD trips for me yet.
However, I have been to one match, away to Arsenal the last day of the 2016-17 season- Lukaku's last game. Not a memorable performance but an unforgettable experience. We were sat with the away fans and everyone was wonderful. The only hitch was when my then girlfriend and I tried to walk back to our seats with our beers!
Apologies for getting off topic. Garner was very impressive yesterday, and his non-celebration was classy I thought. Not something you would see in American sports very often.
31/12/2025 20:04:44
Peter, I posted my comment before seeing yours. I think I remember Lukaku not celebrating goals against West Brom. I think I like it (as with much else about English soccer) because it's so different from American sports. I hear people lament that the EPL is getting too Americanized is ways big and small, and I think that's a shame if for no other reason than that global sport and culture seem to get more and more homogenized and in the process something irretrievable is lost. I like familiarity and novelty. If they ever try to put commercial breaks in the EPL I'll stop watching!
31/12/2025 23:50:17
I am obviously delighted with the result but, contrary to most posters, I didn't think we played very well at all. Garner did play well, but our midfield were second fiddle to theirs for most of the match conceding the bulk of possession to an outfit that is just fourth off the bottom and yet they had ample opportunities to pepper our box with crosses at will.
Our standouts for me were our CB pairing of Tarkowski and particularly O'Brien who I thought were immense. I didn't think either Rohl or McNeil (his superb assist apart) contributed much to the game at all and seemed to be occupied chasing shadows for much of the game. I was pleased to see Iroegbunam look to take the ball forward himself on occasion. I hope he continues to try that more, but generally our attack all look to be short of confidence when advancing forward and seem reluctant to play an early ball in to the box. More often a promising forward position ends up with the ball back at Pickford who hoofs it up field only to be lost straightaway.
I'm still not convinced Barry will develop into much. Neither he nor Beto are our CF options if we want to progress. I don't want to sound too negative or critical, but I'm just relating how I felt when watching our players yesterday. If we're honest we weren't really convincing but we did take our two good chances well which is a pleasant change. We definitely need KDH, Ndiaye and Branthwaite back to make us really competitive.
01/01/2026 00:42:16
Thats ok Weston, its just a bug bear of mine, my wife would say its just me being grumpy.
I think what got to me this time was the fact he had only been on loan for a season at Forest although I appreciate the likes of Richarlison not celebrating when scoring against us but then he had been here four years and loves the club
01/01/2026 08:22:22
Brilliant away performance, especially considering the amount of players we have missing.
Lots of positives for the players who have barely kicked a ball this season, and Dibling in particular is starting to show some of the skills we were hoping to see. Russell Martin is convinced he'll end up playing centrally, and I go along with that.
And a special mention for Nathan Patterson who, after a couple of dodgy moments, put in a real shift and showed just how much we've missed having an actual RB in our team. He was so much more comfortable on the ball in that position that Jake.
There's nothing quite like an unexpected win, I'm off to YouTube now to watch the highlights for the 5th or 6th time!
Happy New Year everyone.
01/01/2026 08:33:31
Craig (27) You make valid points. But in the circumstances of a severely weakened team our players inability to retain possession made it inevitable we would come under severe pressure from Forest. One of the priorities in the summer was to improve the quality of our play in attacking areas with better retention and more purpose in the use of possession; hence the signings of KDH and Grealish, proven Premier League players of top quality.
Without the first choice trio of Ndiaye, KDH and Grealish it was a real concern we would pose no threat on the ball and be unable to withstand sustained pressure. Before the game most of us would have celebrated a battling draw. That we won with such a depleted squad was a wonderful surprise but I doubt many of us will be drawn into thinking the line-up on Tuesday evening would be able to repeat that performance or outcome on a consistent basis.
01/01/2026 10:08:27
Craig #27. Agree with your thoughts on Barry & Beto.
However Im confident that Moyes knows what a proper centre forward looks like (with a limited budget he did sign Yakubu and Louis Saha in his first period) and will find one.
He also knows what attacking full backs look like, so Im confident of improvements in those areas too.
The issue will be how long it takes to get them.
01/01/2026 11:04:58
Id say its without doubt the team which won at Forest, would not be able to go and start winning a lot of games, but thats not the point imo. The point is that we need to make the squad stronger, and to do this we need to start using more players, rather than just the same team again next week.
Sometimes in football, needs-must, produces a lot more than anyone is expecting, and thats why its imperative that the manager keeps his squad of players interested, when his better players return.
Get out of the new world if you cant change your hand, because the order is (hopefully) rapidly changing!!
01/01/2026 13:17:33
How is Moyes playing more players linked to a “new world order” again, Anthony?
01/01/2026 17:54:51
Tony#32
100% right. Garner's pivotal performance in the last two games will not go unnoticed. As a matter of fact it will be metriced to death by the opposition. He will be getting specific attention.Grealish needs to come back in and step up his pace of play. His current play is too slow for the Premier League.A tall order after his New Year blitz in London.
It's not about formation it is about different player emphasis within the formation.A tight unit moving into position in different formations, trying to dictate the play, throughout the game.
01/01/2026 21:28:55
A couple of relevant points to add to the discussion I think.
On Grealish, let's enjoy this season as a one off, I don't think the club would splash out a large amount of their summer transfer budget in June on a player who will be 31 years old next year with little or no 'sell on value' and command a massive salary
Under our new regime, the new CEO has already stated how he would like the club to act on all future transfer strategy ie Buy younger better value players, at a reasonable price, with the potential to sell on at a significant margin.
In other words, let's not make the mistakes of the past regime, whose transfer dealings were not great.
Back to the Grealish situation, why are so many fans convinced he was unfit to play because he was 'under the influence' from the Xmas period?
Do we have to believe all the clickbait articles that now appear in the media, as they all compete for the gutter headlines?
He might have just been under the weather?
01/01/2026 21:32:16
They are just lyrics to a very old song, entitled the times theyre a changin, John.
02/01/2026 06:55:46
Reference Grealish the Club confirmed he had a virus.Londin reports are untrue.I have fell victim to the gutter press full stop
03/01/2026 21:52:28
Glad to see the report refers to our new ground as Bradley Moore dock, and not the corporate logo that is usually attached to it. Just because they use it doesnt mean we have to.

Garner supported more getting forward and Everton working more as a unit. Dyche's system giving them more room to play.A good result for a more on the front foot Everton , capitalising on the tangible benefits.McNeil and Dibling played that bit more forward.
