Life at Everton’s gleaming new home by the Mersey might have been chequered thus far but, away from Bramley-Moore Dock, the Blues have been making a habit this season of upsetting long odds and Premier League history, both relatively recent and long established.

They triumphed at Old Trafford despite having to play all but 13 minutes with 10 men, won on Bournemouth’s home turf in the league for the first time ever and beat Nottingham Forest in the last game of 2025 despite David Moyes having to work with a severely depleted squad.

In truth, the manager’s selection options weren’t much better heading into this trip to Villa Park than they were at the City Ground three weeks ago and with Unai Emery’s men seeking a 12th successive home win and second place in the table, Evertonian expectations of getting anything from today’s game were meagre.

The Blues pulled together, though, and gutted out an admirably defiant performance, hitting the post after just 11 seconds, scoring two goals — one was disallowed on an infuriating technicality that called into further question the validity of some of the rules around offside; the other was a wonderful finish by Thierno Barry — and, thanks in part to another world-class Jordan Pickford save, styming a much-vaunted Aston Villa outfit.

All the talk coming into this match was around Aston Villa, their surprise title charge and, to a lesser extent, the return to these parts of their former hero, Jack Grealish. Had the Villans won, they would have leap-frogged Manchester City and sat just four points behind leaders Arsenal but they were frustrated by Everton for whom Grealish was less the star and more of a cog in a patched-up machine.

If there was a standout performer in the butter-yellow change strip, it was James Garner who worked tirelessly in the midfield alongside the equally industrious young pair of Harrison Armstrong and Merlin Röhl while James O’Brien was a rock in partnership with James Tarkowski and Nathan Patterson acquitted himself well at right-back.

Barry ultimately stole the headlines but Röhl came within a whisker of announcing himself on the Premier League stage with the first action of the game. Jordan Pickford launched the ball long following the kick-off, Barry won the flick-on and in a moment reminiscent of Abdoulaye Doucouré’s opener against Leicester almost a year ago, Röhl stole onto the knockdown but watched his right-foot shot bounce off the inside of the post.

Having survived that very early scare — it was the earliest a team has hit the woodwork in a match since Opta began keeping records of such incidents 20 years ago — Villa looked to settle into their preferred mode of trying to tease Everton into a press and then spring a through-ball between the lines for Morgan Rogers or Ollie Watkins to race onto.

Emiliano Buendia, so often an Everton nemesis who had contributed to the Blues failing to beat the Villans in the league for a decade, threaded Rogers in with just four minutes gone but the latter side-footed over the bar and that would be a feature of the forward’s afternoon.

Eight minutes later, when Röhl was robbed of the ball in midfield, Ian Maatsen was played in on the overlap but his shot was saved by Pickford before the hosts suffered a significant blow with the loss to injury of midfield general, John McGinn.

His replacement, Evann Guessand, almost made an early impact when Youri Tielemans picked him out with an incisive pass but Pickford smothered at his feet while, at the other end, Emiliano Martinez had to push a fizzing Vitalii Mykolenko drive over his bar following excellent work by Röhl.

From that corner, taken short to Garner who whipped a dangerous ball into the six-yard box, Jake O’Brien thought he had put Everton ahead with a thumping header but the referee’s assistant flagged for offside straight away, killing the celebrations of the traveling Toffees in the away section.

There was hope when replays showed that the player in a clearly offside position when the cross was struck was Armstrong but Video Assistant Referee, Paul Howard, upheld the on-field decision claiming that the teenager was interfering with play by jumping for the ball in front of Buendia.

That second let-off seemed to spark Villa into greater urgency and when Maatsen raced to the byline and cut the ball back for Rogers, he looked odds-on to score until O’Brien blocked his shot behind at close range. From the corner, Pickford did well to beat away another powerful effort from Rogers to keep things goalless.

Emery’s side almost grabbed the lead late in the first-half, however, when Tielemans was once again the provider with a high ball to find Guessand but, thankfully, his looping header over Pickford bounced off the crossbar instead of dropping in.

If the expectation was that Villa would regroup during the interval and make a more concerted effort to push themselves over the line in the second period, it seemed that way for the first 15 mins, even if they weren’t able to fashion many clear-cut chances against a stubborn Everton back line.

Grealish’s early slip sparked a Villa counter-attack but Tarkowski was well placed to block a Watkins shot before Tielemans headed a gilt-edged chance wide of the target from Matty Cash’s accurate delivery.

At the other end, Garner ballooned a rare chance of the Blues high over the goal but just before the hour mark, a mistake by the home defence gave Everton the opening they needed to grab the lead.

Seizing on a loose ball that had bounced off Pau Torres’s foot just outside the Villa box, Dwight McNeil tried to curl a shot around Martinez but the Argentine was initially equal to it, diving to his right and getting both gloves on it. When he failed to maintain his grip on the ball, though, he presented it to Barry who composed himself beautifully to chip it back over the prone keeper and under the crossbar, his dinked finish eluding a desperate lunge by Ezri Konsa to keep it out.

Predictably, it was largely one-way traffic for the remainder of the contest but Everton stuck to their task superbly and after Rogers had skied back-to-back efforts into the Holte End, Pickford pulled a save out of the top draw to prevent him equalising. A set-piece from the Villa right fell to Rogers just outside the penalty area and when he swept the ball towards the top corner, England’s No 1 leapt salmon-like to palm it behind.

Backed by an increasingly restless home crowd, Villa pressed in the closing stages with O’Brien charging down a shot by Konsa, Tarkowski blocking a strike by Buendia and Pickford comfortably catching substitute Lucas Digne’s over-head kick.

But by stoppage time, Emery’s charges had largely run out of ideas and only a stinging ball forward by Tielemans that Buendia was unable to divert goal-wards with his head threatened to ruin Everton’s day.

This isn’t the first time an un-fancied Everton team has gone to Villa Park and dynamited a long Aston Villa winning run. In 2023, Emery’s men were on a 10-game sequence of home victories when the Toffees beat them 2-1 in the Carabao Cup. (Coincidentally, today's referee, Tony Harrington was also the main official on that occasion.) That evening, Sean Dyche had close to a fully fit squad; this afternoon, Moyes had just Beto, the struggling Tyler Dibling and a barely-fit Seamus Coleman as experienced, senior-level replacements on this bench.

As such, it was another stunning away result that puts the Blues back in touch with the European places and prolongs this rollercoaster ride of emotions that has characterised the past month or so as Moyes had tried to find solutions despite a raft of absences due to injury, suspension and the Africa Cup of Nations.

Now, as the likes of Iliman Ndiaye and Idrissa Gueye prepare to return from Morocco, if he could just sort out the home form…

Personally I wasn’t too surprised to see us pull off yet another miraculous victory on the road, somehow getting results with very little to choose from, it’s just how it’s been going this season especially on the back of bad results at home we invariably perform better on our travels. Moyes deserves huge credit, at least it will keep a certain few on here quiet..for now.

I thought to a man everyone performed exceptionally, not one weak performance.
Patterson seems to be enjoying himself and deserves a real run, O’Brien solid as a rock again, we look much more balanced just by simply having a proper right back though, it’s a no brainier really, surely Moyes will stick with this defence, give Patterson a real chance there might be a good player there.

Röhl was so much better I have been guilty of handing out harsh criticism recently but he proved me wrong tonight with a stellar performance alongside the main man Garner, who if I’m not mistaken has picked up 5 yellows so will miss Leeds’ visit.

Barry played his best game in an Everton shirt.
Winning headers all over the pitch causing havoc for Villa’s defenders, a wonderful goal too, I could hardly believe it was the same player I’d been watching all season, simply superb from Barry, I even found myself getting a lump in my throat shortly after he scored, I’m not entirely sure why either, I just felt something special about that moment, was made up for him.

Well done boys, I’m one very proud Evertonian tonight.

Harry (2). Garner will not be suspended. The system is that five yellows in the first nineteen games earns a one match suspension. As we have passed that point the sanction no longer applies. If however he reaches ten yellows before the end of the season he will receive a suspension of, I think, two games.

I know what you mean about the goal Harry. It was an outstanding finish against the world's best, it felt like a significant moment for him and us.

Owing to circumstances beyond anyone’s control I did not arrive at Villa Park until halftime. The second half made for more comfortable viewing than I foresaw. We kept Villa at arm’s length, looked compact, pressed high when possible and countered effectively when the opportunity arose.

James Garner was once again magnificent in a true team performance. Patterson gave another creditable performance while Barry’s finish was exquisite. The power of Armstrong and Röhl was refreshing with Villa players forced to retreat more often than they were comfortable with. In the end they not only ran out of ideas but also energy.

So if Moyes deserves enough credit to keep certain people quiet, does this mean they should also keep their mouths shut when he doesn’t deserve any credit either Harry?

I really enjoyed watching us play today, and was very impressed with the way we were set up, although this never stopped me wondering what our managers logic was for changing a winning team after the Forest game?

Loyal to certain players who have done well for him maybe? But surely anyone who has watched us playing with O’Brien, at fullback, can see how much it has been affecting the overall balance of the team, and especially whoever has been chosen to play on the right side of our midfield?

Don’t worry, be happy, especially if we continue to play with purpose, while staying nice and strong, disciplined and also compact.

For me Everton were more on the front foot, with good ball progression.Having a proper right back in Patterson helped alot and O Brien was a Centre back that pushed up with play.It was only in the last 15 minutes that Moyes resorted to type.

Moyes seen this fixture as pivotal to his survival and therefore had to should some ambition to get a result.

Moyes picks better teams when he doesn’t have a choice. He’s clearly a very good manager in many ways, and does the 80% of the job that’s behind the scenes better than most, but his selections are often just plain wrong.

What possible reason can he have now for dropping Patterson again now? Another good performance in winning, away clean sheet. O’Brien and Tarkowski is our best centre-back pairing until Branthwaite is fit.

The whole season has seen Alcaraz, Patterson, Aznou and Dibling under-played and atrophied. If he’d used them more they’d have developed better and been more ready to step in when needed.

I never understand why we’re not allowed to criticise Moyes if we win. Win, lose or draw, I see the same strengths and faults in him and feel they can be legitimately pointed out.

Improbable, yes but, a very valiant performance, that must be shared by all participants.

Nobody put a foot wrong… a rare performance !

Barry’s goal was taken with so much aplomb, that showed me that he does have a football brain!

Apart from the Brilliant Garner, who seems to have matured into our Mr irreplaceable, there has to be a shout out for the much maligned (by myself!) McNeil and Patterson.

I honestly was not expecting such a solid showing from all involved, given our depleted resources.

It’s absolutely Bonkers, when you look at the gap between us, and «  the Above ».. it has become as tight, as two coats of paint !

Great performance, Obrien deserves a run at CB and Patterson deserves a run at RB.Much better balance and Tarks plays better with Jake. Love the energy from Armstrong, Rohl and Garner. Quality finish from Barry!

super impressed with the tenacity of the midfield, lots of energy and tackling tonight. We simply have to get Garner tied down on a long term deal. He is unrecognisable from the timid lad we knew up until last season. He is a future captain.

If only we could become more consistent, we are not too far off the European places and becoming a regular top 8/top 6 side. The thoughts of an O'Brien/Branthwaite central defensive pairing makles the mouth water, although perhaps they are too similar?? Hopefully, time will tell!!

That was a great away performance, but not unexpected considering our form under Moyes.

Nathan Patterson has performed as well as anyone at RB this season and deserves his place in the team. I'll be furious if Moyes drops him once Keane is available again.

Myko is improving and seems to have been given licence to shoot from anyway in the last 2games.

Rhol showed his engine, Armstrong his potential but Garner was a cut above the rest despite being fortunate to stay on.

And the finish from Barry was top-drawer stuff, along with Grealish being possibly the best player in the world at helping to slow the game down when you're defending a slender lead.

Everyone played well, but now we have to do it at Home when the pressure is on us to force the issue. And that's a completely different game.

I thought our center backs had their cushiest game of the season. That was down to our midfield winning the battle against their Villa counterparts. A superb performance by all our boys across the middle of the park.
On the odd occasion Villa got into our box we were comfortable with the exception of one effort which was brilliantly stopped by Pickford - Incredible movement of the feet to get across goal to make the save possible.

Barry's smile is infectious and it was wonderful to see it light up Villa park. He may not be comfortable dealing with balls fizzed into his feet, but that finish was exquisite. Not be the most graceful player we have ever had, but his is beginning to show that he knows where the net is when he is given the chance.

How to get the best out of Moyes ? Take away selection headaches. Give him the bare 12 and he will find away to get the best out of them.

As a unit. We looked really quite impressive yesterday

A great team performance.
Credit to Moyes for finding a way, again, and for transforming Grealish

I thought the win at Forest with our depleted squad was great but yesterday’s victory against a Villa side third in the league and with 11 straight home wins behind them was excellent.

I think it also helped that our merry band of brothers had eight days to recover from last weeks sorry performances.

Great individual efforts across the board but it was the team effort that stood out and that was testimony to Moyes ability to bring a small group together and follow the plan to the letter.

I agree with other posters that Patterson must remain at right back as it is clear for all to see that we are much better balanced.

Very happy for Armstrong who is showing that he has not only the physical attributes but also the brain to take him far in this game. Another future captain I would say.

19/01/2026    10:45:02

That performance was a million miles from a threadbare team held together with gaffer tape - they played like a properly settled, self-composed unit. A lot of hard yards and planning clearly done at Finch Farm last week.
The Forest and United games were more smash and grab, yesterday the pressing and midfield solidity was much more of what can be utilised at home games. But getting the first goal is key to maintaining confidence in this team.
Also - Barry, Armstrong and Patterson just took a fair bit of pressure off the recruitment team. We still need new faces, but maybe not panic buys in January.

19/01/2026    11:43:50

I have been critical of Garner in the past saying that I thought he was lightweight. Well I now have to say that he is operating in the midfield as I would expect a genuine midfield general to play. No lightweight now.

I am also happy to see Patterson back at RB. I wrote praising him some time ago likening him to the Scottish full backs we had of old. Yesterday's performance brought back a semblance of that sort of thing which I welcome with open arms. With Jake in his rightful place Patterson should stay, no doubt about it, at RB if he can keep his performances up to that level.

No need to spend money in January unless it is for a development signing at centre forward. Talking about signings, the Moroccan No9 we have been linked with didn't show anything, when he came on in the AFCON final that would be an improvement for us so I feel we shouldn't spend on him. Let Barry keep on developing. He is still rough around the edges but knows where the goal is. He will improve further given the chance.

Yesterdays performance was brilliant. Moyes chose from what he had available and the chosen ones did everything that was expected of them plus some. Excellent.

19/01/2026    14:17:14

I don't think anybody who had seen our last 3 games would have believed that our even more depleted squad could put a performance together like the one we saw yesterday. As others have said everybody did their bit against one of the top form teams in the League.

Apart from our top performance there were two other major talking points one in our favour and one against. The first concerned James Garner, who once again was our stand out player, however, he could so easily have been sent off for what was clearly a very silly foul. He was lucky, and he stayed on to play a major part in the game, but hopefully Moyes will have had words with him as we have lost too many players this season in similar circumstances.

Jake O'Brien was unlucky, and scored what appeared to be a very good goal. Fortunately on the day the decision didn't affect the result, and Villa could hardly complain that all the decisions had gone against them. So all in all a very satisfactory performance and a brilliant result.

Against all the odds, arguably one of the stand out performances by Everton in tecent times, and bearing the missing players, the best?

Fair play to Moyses and his staff who'v'e learnt some hard lessons, this last month.

But the spirit, belief and team work, from start to finish was outstanding.
The whole squaad played their part.

Barry, worked hard on and off the ball, and a superb finish, from an acute angle. That wasnt a fluke.
McNeil, played his best game this season, Patterson got stuck in and is improving playing back to back games.

Again Everton, get shafted by the VAR.
The disallowed goal, at our old ground, when Wayne Clarkes, header, I recall from a Willow cross, was a stinker, like Don Hutchisons at Goodidon, v the RS.

Yesterday decades on,the so called technology, can't do the job.

So was Armstrong not allowed to jump for a cross? Whats going wrong with officials? The libesman flagged for offside immediately.

Brilliant Everton, but each week, VAR, is doing my head in.

So for the Leeds, hopefully Everton, can carry on the same form, and break the bad run recently seen at home.

Leeds will be at it, but hopefully one or two Everton players, are back, and to keep a clean sheet and win.

Wonderful victory. I still want to see more Dibling, but McNeil showed his worth (and me wrong). Barry is getting there- the confidence boost from that goal will be invaluable.

Midfield- wow. Imagine those three young fellows running it for years to come. Where does KDH fit in??? In all seriousness, Gana has to be approaching the end of his guaranteed starter in the PL days. What's his contract? We might not be able to replace his paticular style and abilities, but the midfield seems to be in good hands with the players referred to above and also Iroegbunam. Not sure if Alcaraz makes the cut. Sadly, Armstrong should probably see the season out back at PNE. With players coming back he won't be needed. We'll want to see what Iroegbunam and Alcaraz have to show and get KDH back up to speed. No point in Armstrong being a mostly bench player here when he can still be gaining experience every week in the Championship. If only there were some cup games coming up to provide more minutes to go around

Now, all that said, if Moyes puts O'Brien back at RB, he is dead to me. Keane coming back can not put O'Brien at RB. If Moyes wants Keane in for O'Brien at CB, fine. I wouldn't agree with it, especially with Keane's contract ending and O'Brien being the future, but regardless who plays CB, Patterson MUST play RB for now and until a permanent solution is brought in or Patterson proves himself to be that solution. If Moyes can't get this right, I despair. I'd be happy to give it to Patterson for the rest of the season. Please no January panic buys at RB or center forward.

It is night and day with O'Brien at RB vs Patterson at RB and O'Brien at CB. Moyes MUST see it now.

Pickford, top drawer. Imagine if we hadn't signed him in that dismal era of disappointing signings.

I've been pulling my hair out when Moyes reverts to O'brien at RB, so its reassuring to see that I'm not alone. In the main, I'm a big supporter of David Moyes, but he occasionally doesn't seem to learn.

It was a brilliant performance yesterday - unexpected to say the least! Barry not only took his goal well, but played like a proper centre forward, causing plenty of trouble for Villa.

Superb finish from Barry. Looks like he is starting to find his feet. What’s that now 3 in 4 for him? The ignorant gobshites who could tell after all of five minutes that he is not even a professional footballer must be gutted…

It was very enjoyable to watch such a competent performance. Jimmy Garner rightly getting the plaudits for his work in midfield, but Rohl looked like the real deal alongside him. If Patterson isn’t playing right back next week, then he surely must be questioning his future at Everton. Who could blame him if he wants out before the end of the month.

Sorry mate I have to disagree with you re the Senegal team. 'Heroic' don't think so, thought they were an absolute disgrace to the game. Whether or not you agreed or disagreed about the merits of the penalty decision, their decision to walk off the pitch in protest was disgraceful.

I thought I was watching a Sunday league game. They not only crowded around the referee like they were going to lynch him, but then decided to push him in the back when he went to the VAR screen.

I would ban them from the next Afcon tournament. But I doubt Fifa will give them more than a slap on the wrist.

Nothing heroic about their behaviour, whether they included Everton players or not

Very pleased with the result although I didn't think it, or the recent Forest performance, was flawless or 'exceptional'.

The best player performance for me was from O'Brien. Very solid at the back, scored a good set piece goal (albeit disallowed), and shows he has the pace to allow the defense to sit higher up. I certainly wouldn't be replacing him at centre-back when Keane is available again as I think Keane's lack of pace is an underlying reason for why our defense sits so deep. However, I wasn't convinced by Patterson's performance. Still looks a bit brittle in defense to me and was caught quite a few times on the overlap, although he wasn't helped by O'Neil's lazy defending.

Unfortunately, the overall set up and employed 'hoof ball' tactics still ends up conceding the bulk of possession to the opposition, and it relies on striking the opposition on the break. These tactics aren't necessarily ineffective, as yesterday showed, but if we only have half the possession of the opposition then good teams, and some average ones, will end up punishing us.

The skillful ball use and retention of Ndiaye and Grealish and the industry of KDH will hopefully help our midfield gain more possession parity when they return. But I'd still like to see more fluent and quicker 'pass and move' tactics employed by our central midfield (if they have the skills) than what we've seen so far this season.

That of course comes down to coaching, and its either not Moyes preferred style, or he's worked out we don't have the players to adequately execute it. I'm not sure which one it is.

What a creepy little post 26 is. A poster who only ever surfaces to try to ruin celebratory match day threads because he doesnt know how to enjoy a win. Barry's not a natural footballer. His attempts at playing football, have at times, been excruciating, but he has remained very popular within the fan base because he is desperate to do well. He may yet prove to be the answer to our goal scoring problem.

Only a miserable, cowardly "Ignorant little gobshite" would lurk waiting to tell proper Evertonians that they are gutted when he gets a vital winner.

He can be a bit ungainly, and he has a rangey gait, but I wouldn’t say he’s not a natural footballer. He somehow manages to be both clumsy and skilful at the same time. If he toughens up a bit I reckon he’ll come reasonably good.
