Everton press European claims with thumping victory over Chelsea
Everton 3 – 0 Chelsea
On the occasion of Premier League match number 747 for David Moyes as a manager, Hill Dickinson Stadium truly got its lift-off as the Blues claimed their first big scalp by the Docks
This was the evening that Bramley-Moore Dock had been waiting for. Yes, the last-gasp win over Crystal Palace was the first truly ecstatic moment Everton fans had enjoyed in the new stadium and the 3-0 triumph over Nottingham Forest had arguably been the team’s most complete performance prior to today. But a big occasion under the lights by the waterfront with a victory to match over the one of the media darling clubs… that was what had been missing.
Today, Evertonians got it — and how! On the occasion of Premier League match number 747 for David Moyes as a manager, Hill Dickinson Stadium truly got its lift-off as the Blues’ home 10 months after they left Goodison Park.
From the blue smoke shrouded coach welcome that evoked memories of another, more desperate home clash with Chelsea from yesteryear to the febrile atmosphere inside the Toffees’ near 53,000-seater on the banks of the royal blue Mersey and the thumping victory, this was proper Everton.
And, remarkably, it brought them to within two points of their more fancied opponents, who currently sit in the Europa League qualification place of sixth, and within three of neighbours, Liverpool, with the first Merseyside derby at the Docks still to come next month.
The media talk will, no doubt, be all about Chelsea and their struggles under Liam Rosenior since his honeymoon period at Stamford Bridge evaporated but Everton, with the undercurrent of seething injustice in the crowd at the leniency of the punishment the West Londoners received from the Premier League for breaking the rules, put on a terrific display.
Dogged and indefatigable without the ball, they frustrated the visitors at one end and harried them into mistakes at the other. And when things didn’t quite fall the Blues’ way from their diligent pressing, James Garner marked the week of his first England call-up by carving Chelsea open with a superb assist for Beto to give them a half-time lead.
The Portuguese-born striker doubled his tally in the second period and Iliman Ndiaye put a bow on the occasion with a sublime third as Everton won back-to-back home matches for the first time this season in emphatic fashion.
Last weekend’s defeat at Arsenal was cruel given the nature of the Toffees’ performance which deserved much more than a late 2-0 defeat but, credit to Moyes and his charges, they simply carried the spirit and industry they had showed at the Emirates into what was a huge game by the waterfront.
They refused to let Chelsea settle, ceding the bulk of possession but buzzing around the visitors’ back line like flies as they tried to play out from the back. Beto forced an early mistake from Robert Sanchez, tackling him as he dithered with a pass and almost seizing on the loose ball before the goalkeeper toed it away to a team-mate who cleared his lines.
The striker then teed up a chance for Garner but his left-foot effort was blocked on its way to goal before Rosenior’s men started to exert some concerted pressure. James Tarkowski, restored to the team after missing the Arsenal defeat with a minor hamstring complaint, had to make two important blocks in front of his own goal amid a moment of uncharacteristic panic in the Everton defence.
Whatever momentum Chelsea had been trying to establish was broken in the 33rd minute, however, when Garner picked up the ball in the centre-circle and, spotting Beto’s movement, threaded a perfect ball through the defence for the No 9 to stride ahead of Wesley Fofana and lift it over the advancing Sanchez into the net.
It was no more than the Toffees deserved but they had to survive another scare before half-time to ensure they went into the mid-way stage ahead. Jordan Pickford initially flapped at a corner after Tarkowski had blocked Malo Gusto’s attempted cross behind but the England star recovered brilliantly to make another of his stunning reflex saves to palm Enzo Fernández’s close-range half-volley over his crossbar.
If the expanse of 45-plus minutes felt like an eternity coming out of the break, Everton settled the nerves of the home faithful to a degree by continuing in the same mode in which they played the first half.
Beto almost nipped in to meet a Tarkowski knock-down following a corner and Sanchez had to be careful not to carry Garner’s in-swinging free-kick over his line a few minutes later, but after Pickford finger-tipped another Fernández wide at full stretch, Everton doubled their lead.
Displaying his superb reading of the game, Idrissa Gueye stepped in to intercept an Andrey Santos pass aimed for Marc Cucurella before bombing forward into space, waiting for Beto to make a run off the shoulder of his marker. When he slipped the ball in, the Guinea-Bissau international hammered a right-foot shot that bobbled through Sanchez’s legs and crept in, Everton’s players wheeling away in delight before referee Sam Barrott had time to signal confirmation of the goal from the goal-line decision system.
Seeking to try and reverse the tide, Rosenior threw on Estevao and for spells it looked as though the Brazilian might be the only player other than Fernández capable of causing Everton any problems. Pickford had had to come smartly off his line to deny the latter in the 69th minute, preserving the 100th clean sheet of his time with the Blues, and then watch almost helplessly as the former’s corner bounced off the face of his crossbar.
However, with the Londoners pushing in vain to get a foothold, Everton’s threat lay on the counter-attack, with Ndiaye and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall both firing too close to Sanchez at the end of quick breakaways in the final 20 minutes.
In between, though, Ndiaye had wrapped things up beautifully. Beto rose to nod on Pickford’s raking ball forward, with it dropping to Ndiaye outside the Chelsea box. He danced wide of Moises Caicedo to make space for a shot and then caressed the ball into the top corner with a sumptuous effort.
There was a late chance for substitute Tim Iroegbunam who powered his way towards goal near the byline and forced one last save from Sanchez but that would merely have been extra garnish on an already fabulous afternoon in L3.
With seven games to go, Everton not only find themselves in the mix for any of the three Continental competitions, crucially they have momentum while many of the teams around them are faltering somewhat. Certainly, two of the three teams immediately above them, Chelsea and Liverpool, are going through bad moments in their seasons, with big question marks over their respective managers while Brentford have drawn their last three.
It makes the Blues' next game at the Gtech Stadium in three weeks’ time another massive fixture in the race for Europe while that all-Mersey affair that will follow on 19th April has all the makings of an equally pivotal occasion. Who’d have thought that at various times this season when a season of stable mid-table mediocrity felt like the summit of our ambitions?

Today felt complete, we were so unfortunate last week, things were just a fraction off.
But today we got our just reward, hats off, best performance in our new home, so deserved.
Everyone put a shift in, we worked together, so many good passages of play, controled, quality football, a joy to watch.
Any fan of the game would have enjoyed that match.
More of the same please, we can believe, we can build on this, so made up tonight.

Excellent report on an excellent performance and an excellent result. Whod a thunk it - from relegation worries to valid passport worries in the blink of an eye?
An ‘away fixture approach delivered us our best home result of the season. We can do wonders with 1/3 possession - buzzing like flies when out of possession. Surely the home crowd will accept this approach against the R/S and City? Onwards and upwards Blues.

I saw this one coming to be honest, Chelsea are average and coming off the back of a hammering by psg I saw no reason why we couldnt join in and thats exactly what we did.
We were showing signs of a performance of this nature the last few games, even against Arsenal we could have had 3 or 4 goals so it was really satisfying see it come to fruition today.
I actually predicted a 3-0 win, I wonder what odds I would have got? Im not a betting man but Im sure it would have been decent. Moyes clearly sent us out to give a wounded Chelsea another clobbering and it could of been by a heftier margin had we of punished their dilly dallying on the ball when we caught them out a few times in the early stages with a press that seems to be becoming more efficient of late.
Every man on the pitch was superb, Garner is just so reliable, Id like to see him continue to improve, I think he may be more of a 6 though with his ability to break up play and link defence to attack.
Keane has seemed to of resurrected his career, another stellar performance from him, hes been our best defender this season. Beto was a real handful today, when we setup like this it suits his game, bit higher up the pitch and play through balls for him to run on to and you will get the best out of him, cant see Barry getting another look in.
Moyes got it spot on, was brave and went out to win. Cant knock him there, when we have a fit squad hes more than capable of turning out entertaining football, we just dont have the depth and are lacking quality in certain areas, Im hoping we can have a similar outcome in a few weeks against you know who, beat them and even the Moyes out brigade may start to believe in you..I already do.

Great day all round. Them losing started the day well and many of us felt in our soul that we would master Chelsea and thus it was.
Now for them, City and the Spuds so we can put the media pundits in their place and gain our rightful place back at the top.

An absolute scintillating performance.
I was going into this game with less apprehension, as previous encounters.
Given our Stoic performance against Arsenal, in a match where we could and should have scored and also the fact that we were undone in the 88 minute, by a pinball incident, where the ball ended up being gifted to a player in front of an empty net
Their second goal was irrelevant, as Picked was in another County, but to their young upcoming talent, it mattered a lot.
Today was a different game and I am so Proud of the lads continued commitment after that last game, to show what they were really about.
as for our Goals.. well they were Cheeky !
The defence splitting pass by Garner, was brazenly chipped to Perfection by Beto.
His second goal might have had a slice of luck involved.. but, hey! Arent we deserved of some of the Green Stuff too ?
Our third goal by Ndiaye was something to behold and makes you want to pinch yourself, that we have such a real Talent in our team, who is well capable of of such exploits.. not to mention his Defensive contributions, which are outstanding.
So, for me, Vertigo is the new Black!

Enjoyed that performance very much indeed. First time this season Ive come home from the game with a croaky voice!
Full credit to Moyes who set us up beautifully and full credit to the players who carried the game plan out perfectly.
Best atmosphere as well at BMD, really loud and surely helped spur the team on.
Three more wins out of the final seven will hopefully be enough to cement European football but with the next two games against Brentford and the RS we can maybe set our sights a little higher. Who knows? Onwards and upwards blues!

This was the day Hill Dickinson Stadium was baptised. It felt like we were finally at home. This was most certainly the strongest display and result of the season. Indeed it was as near to a complete performance as any I have witnessed home or away for several years.
It was also a great effort by the home crowd which truly rose to the occasion in creating the vibrant atmosphere required when the team is facing strong opposition, or indeed any opposition. After all Chelsea are the World Club Champions! Our men made their boys look ordinary. The crowd loved it.
Sometimes the hardest games prove to be the easiest. I doubt anyone will care that we had only 36% possession. The win was gained through great teamwork from front to back. The early pressing not only unsettled the Chelsea defenders but also served to bring the fans fully on board. We defended deep when we needed to and counterattacked with skill and pace when the opportunity arose.
My only criticism would be that at 2-0 some players perhaps got carried away in the raucous atmosphere. Careless passes from Keane and Gana might have allowed Chelsea a way back. Thankfully they didnt.
Europe beckons. Ten more points might well be sufficient. At present that looks more than achievable.

Fantastic performance. We played without fear, our passing was incisive and confident. Jake O'Brien tormented that Garnacho lad, little slaps and pulls, driving him mad, it was a joy to see. Well done Beto, particularly after Barry's tantrums last week, who must now be worried for his future at our great club. I don't understand how we had so little possession, it seemed, to me at least, we were in control for most of that match. Strange.
I can remember us being super cooperative with our PL investigation and still being tossed to the lions, but these charlatans get leniency and praise?! Something stinks.
And the stadium looked and sounded glorious all evening, well done to those who organised the flags and coach welcome 💪💪

Everton That. Reclaim the phrase. A derogatory saying used by our own, but I feel like Everton are becoming a proper big club again with big club mentality. That performance was Everton, the best of the Everton I've grown up with anyway.
Moyes set up the team perfectly - every detail covered. I could see how each player knew exactly when their time was to press. This had obviously been meticulously planned and practiced to death. Chelsea had no chance. On the rare occasion that they got into our final 3rd, they found a rock solid back 4 and a world class keeper.
All we needed to do was score a goal or three, which can often be a stumbling block. However, Beto was a beast, matching his ever-present effort with end product this time. If he played like that every match, we would be in the Champions League positions.
I'm delighted for all of the Evertonians at the HD stadium last night - you haven't been blessed with great performances at all this season, until now. Hopefully this will go some way towards making you believe that David Moyes and his lads will put Everton back where we belong.

Totally agree with John Raftery…this was the night Hill Dickinson truly came alive. The atmosphere was superb.Great credit again to the people from the 1878s for the flag display. But tonight really did feel like the “big” win that the stadium needed.
Yes, Ive enjoyed all of our home wins, and the win over Brighton in the first game down on the Dock will always hold great memories for obvious reasons. But last night we REALLY saw what the place can be like when the team and fans are so up for it.
Personally, I love the stadium, and last night it truly felt like home…this is the Hilly Dick…and this is EVERTON!!
22/03/2026 09:19:20
Everton on the front foot and 10 yards up the pitch. Moyes must be thinking a run in Europe may help him.
22/03/2026 12:03:39
Yes, Jerome, hes been saying he wants to get into Europe for most of the season. If we do, wed expect fulsome praise for a pretty spectacular achievement, would you not agree?
Yesterday felt like a genuine turning point in Evertons history - the day it all finally came together at home after some stellar away performances. That was a textbook tram performance and all credit due to Moyes. Were now the team to fear, cant wait for the derby.
22/03/2026 12:08:12
We've just beaten one of the three teams directly above us and play the other two in our next two fixtures. Europe definitely in our own hands.
According to the BBC we are in the mix for the CL. Mad stuff but actually possible, given the extra place available.
I would take all six points gladly but would be happy with beating Brentford and taking anything off them lot.
If Beto is hitting his goal streak then anything is possible.
22/03/2026 12:38:54
What a truly wonderful night, and a great team performance with all the players contributing. Just two thoughts from me, firstly how good to see the continued transformation in McNeil's play. In this form and now wide on the right, but coming inside that left foot is a real thing of beauty. In this form he is certainly worth his place in the team, and offers another alternative on corners and free kicks.
Finally some praise for Moyes and his timing of substitutions, last night when he brought on Branthwaite, I thought the move was truly brilliant. As I looked across from my seat and saw our back line of O'Brien, Keane, Tarkowski, Branthwaite and Mykolenko I knew then we had won the game as no forward line was going to get through those five.

If he can consistently get the team to play like that, which I believe he has the players to do, then TFG may review their strategic plan.
Though I still think Moyes will be expected to develop youth.Chelsea did develop youth, but if you go beyond a certain point in the first team it seems to become unstuck against a hardened Professional approach as they have found out recently.Think Moyes is going to be demanding a core of hardened Professionals. TFG are not going to want to give them the contracts they are looking. It is going to be a interesting Summer.Maybe Moyes thinks TFG need a bit of European pressure, as Kieran #14 says he seems to have those immediately above Everton in the Table in his sights. If he can get Finch Farm ti back him , anything is possible. You don't survive in the Premier League through a debacle without some know how.

When the planets align, when the power of a passionate fabase is unleashed, when it all comes together, it's Everton. Injustice, unfortunately for Chelsea, lined up the club aggrieved against the privileged one, bad timing for them, a sense of a chance for vindication.
The fans were up for it, the team was up for it and the manager hit the right combination. Light blue touchpaper and stand back.
Wonderful players may have, but if you stop them from playing, the playing field is leveled. It's effective, it's the only way a team of (sorry, "smaller team") can overcome tactically.
Moyes does that to a T, it takes every player to do his job, any chinks and the house falls, but when it comes together it's bloody good to watch.
Doing it week in and week out is unrealistic, but when it comes together...
23/03/2026 16:36:11
Christine, I get what you're saying. It is unrealistic to think with we will perform perfectly every week, regardless of driving forces on the day or week of a game.
I would hope that there is enough professionalism within the club that a chance of European football with seven games.left is driving force enough for now. All the begrudgers, the negativity, the previous years' relegation battles, PSR punishment, will help of course for context.
24/03/2026 13:33:12
Thanks Moyes and the players for restoring our pride and giving us performances we can enjoy! Of all the goals my favourite has to be Ndiaye's. That flick on by Beto was monstrous and the finish - I'm not sure I'll ever see such a postage stamp finish again! Just wow! The fact it all happened against Chelsea made it all the sweeter! Keep making sure the cheats never prosper Everton! Are we consistent enough, lucky enough, good enough to bag a European place? Why not?!The very fact we're talking about it at the end of March is a minor miracle.
25/03/2026 00:41:47
If Everton could be able to play that bit higher up the pitch, rather than Moyes rigid deep structure, performances would be sufficiently at the level to take more points of competing team, though the performance may not be at the level as against Chelsea. The team in my opinion is capable of that, .All it would take is a bit more confidence from Moyes that they where capable enough.
25/03/2026 10:23:06
it's pace Jerome, or the lack of. You'll see a change once Jarrad is back.
25/03/2026 21:13:22
Jerome (20) I dont think the structure is as rigid as you suggest. Most certainly Moyes tries to set the team up to be compact out of possession in all areas of the field but I dont believe he has ever sent the team out to stay deep. On the contrary my impression is he seeks to pose an attacking threat to opponents whenever possible and whoever those opponents are.
What we have seen in recent games is a fluid structure capitalising on a talented midfield trio with the ability to switch positions, taking it in turns to drop deep to receive the ball from the back line or move forward into attacking areas.
So on Saturday we see Dewsbury-Hall darting to the byline to cross into the six yard box. The next minute he is passing on halfway to Garner who makes a quick forward run before playing the through ball for Betos opening goal. In the second half we see Gana chasing forward, with typical energy, to take possession and lay on the second goal for Beto. Those two goals came from a solid shape with players knowing how and when to push forward.
We remain a team whose current progress is founded on sound defensive shape and effective use of the ball in counterattacking situations. In the latter respect the upgrade in quality this season owes much to the acquisition of Dewsbury-Hall coupled with the significant uplift in Garners form and availability.
We are not however yet at the level where we look entirely comfortable holding the majority of possession. The match by match possession stats confirm the vast majority of our wins come with less than 45% possession. In the games where we have more than 45% we have found it difficult to play through opposition lines.
In some of the latter games we have been drawn into sending too many players into forward areas and being caught on the counter, an obvious example being the goal conceded against Manchester United. So for now at least it surely makes sense to play to our strengths, keep a compact shape and play an effective counter attacking system until such time we can strengthen our attacking options. That includes the full backs as well as the front line forwards.
26/03/2026 09:31:14
Rumours abound this morning that Everton and Forest are considering their options in light of the pathetic sanction handed out to media darlings Chelsea compared to how we / Forest were treated.
I do hope this is true as the disparity is blatant and egregious. There is also the worry that the Chelsea ‘punishment is preparation for giving City a similarly gentle slap on the wrist…
Watch this space.
27/03/2026 14:57:57
John#22
Moyes default position I think is rigid , but when he breaks out from that Everton play more as you suggest, which is better and he does have the players to do that.
I just think that Everton get caught on the counter when they don't move forward as a cohesive unit .This could because of lack of defensive pace or feeling the need to default to defensive rigidity.
But this could be all down to Moyes confidence in his players and whether he thinks they have the necessary capability.
Basically I agree with all you say .It is down to how we both see as the reasons.
As far as Chelsea is concerned they where sold under a Government Mandate and had their debts written off. Then the Premier League continued after that , having previously imposed a Transfer ban.A direct comparison with Everton is not possible .But they got off lighter because the different process and new owners who came clean on their findings after they took over to the Premier League.
But it does appear unfair, because Everton where basically hammered and survived a close to near death experience.
09/04/2026 11:48:57
Watching PSG tactically dismantle the other lot last night in the CL gave me a measure of satisfaction, but it was paltry compared to the vilification of the manager by there so called fans. How the world turns. Karma I think it's called, there has never been a better time to plunge a dagger into the devils heart, a win in the upcoming derby would be too much for all of them, this is a golden opportunity so for God's sake Moyes get it right and I will gold plate a new contract!
All the planets aligning once more, at last?
