Defensive howlers deprive Everton of first away victory
Hull City 2 – 2 Everton
Thierno Barry will be disappointed he didn’t fill his boots while David Moyes will rue lapses by Ainsley Maitland-Niles that gifted Hull two goals that they otherwise looked unlikely to get
Fourth place beckoned for Everton this afternoon but, not for the first time this season, they left their travelling fans tearing their hair out at another golden chance to register a first away win since February that went begging.
The Blues had recovered from the sloppy concession of the opening goal shortly after half-time by levelling within seven minutes and then taking the lead midway through the second half, but another defensive howler let Hull back in to claim a point they scarcely deserved.
Had Thierno Barry scored any of three good to gilt-edged chances before he eventually slammed home that equaliser, Everton would have been out of sight before the Tigers’ late rally. As it was, David Moyes and his men had to be content with retaining their unbeaten record in all competitions even while they would once again spend the journey back to Merseyside wondering what might have been.
In keeping with Everton’s start to the campaign, this was another frustrating watch, made worse by the decision by Hull to keep the grass at MKM Stadium long and seemingly devoid of any moisture. Combined with some rustiness on the part of the players coming out of the three-week international break, it meant the game often slowed to walking pace in the first half while the visitors frequently let themselves down with under-hit or miscued passes.
Nevertheless, they set their stall out with some early forays forward and James Garner prompted Konstantinos Tzolakis into tipping a direct free-kick behind in the fourth minute and Jack Grealish seeing a tamer effort saved by the Greek keeper while Joe Gelhardt had Hull’s first shot on target with 21 minutes gone.
Everton, with Michael Keane making his first Premier League start of the season and Jarrad Branthwaite operating as an awkward left-back in place of the injured Vitalii Mykolenko, thought they’d broken the deadlock 11 minutes before the break when Brennan Johnson turned home the loose ball after Nobel Mendy had blocked Harrison Armstrong’s prod off the line. Annoyingly, the winger’s celebrations were extinguished following a lengthy VAR review that ruled he was offside.
The moment helped to ignite what had hitherto been a fairly lifeless contest and either side could have gone into half-time ahead. Gelhardt’s curler was helped wide by James Tarkowski at the far post and Mendy put a free header over the crossbar from the resulting crossbar before Pickford was called upon to parry from Gelhardt after he had latched onto a long ball from Semi Ajayi.
Then, after some trickery from Grealish took him to the byline, he stood an inviting cross up for Barry but the Frenchman despatched his header a couple of feet over the bar when he had to at least hit the target.
The second period was just two minutes old when, out of nowhere, the hosts scored. Oli McBurnie skinned Branthwaite in the Hull half but the danger seemed remote as his pass in search of Gelhardt only found Ainsley Maitland-Niles. The ball got caught under the full-back’s feet, however, and he was robbed by Sorba Thomas who put Gelhardt put clean through to dink it over the on-rushing Pickford and inside the upright.
Everton responded to the set-back well, though. Armstrong, the game’s outstanding player until Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall came out of his shell, fired at Tzolakis and Barry planted a header off Johnson’s accurate cross into the keeper’s arms before Maitland-Niles briefly atoned for his error with an assist.
John Egan had put another Johnson delivery behind for a corner which was cleared but when Maitland-Niles eventually dropped a high ball back into the Tigers' box, Dewsbury-Hall beat the offside trap to cushion a header past Tzolakis to make it 1–1 in the 55th minute.
It should have been 2–1 just five minutes later when a great move involving Branthwaite and Grealish down the left ended with the big defender squaring it across the six-yard box but Barry couldn’t adjust his feet and the ball slipped agonisingly between his legs.
That represented a hat-trick of missed opportunities for the striker but he made amends a few minutes later when the alert Dewsbury-Hall seized on Thomas’s attempted backwards pass for Mendy and won the subsequent challenge with the defender to knock it into space. Barry raced onto the loose ball and swept it emphatically past Tzolakis to put Everton in the driving seat and on course for victory if they could either kill Hull off or, at least, see the game out.
Sadly, within six minutes the lead evaporated thanks in large part to another awful error by Maitland-Niles. The defender appeared to have the beating of Elliot Stroud near the byline but made a hash of trying to back-heel it to Garner and was dispossessed, with substitute Mohamed Belloumi controlling the cut-back before driving a low shot to which Pickford got a firm hand but he couldn’t keep it out.
This time, despite some positive changes that saw Tyrique George, Tyler Dibling, Hayden Hackney and Charly Alcaraz come on in the closing stages, Everton couldn’t carve open the chances to win it. Alcaraz wasted one late opening when he elected to shoot weakly off target rather than play Hackney in to his right but, ultimately, it was a forgettable conclusion.
Again, in spite of a result that extends the Toffees’ unbeaten run to eight games, it’s hard not feel hugely frustrated in the wake of another winnable match and performance that just about deserved more.
As at Bournemouth six weeks ago, Barry will be disappointed he didn’t fill his boots while Moyes will rue the defensive lapses that gifted Hull two goals that they otherwise looked unlikely to get.

It just looked and felt like the type of game we've seen many, many times.
The game was there to be won, we looked fairly comfortable but without any real conviction to go and kill it off.
Then a slip let's them in and we're going home with a solitary point instead of 3.
Everton, that.

Game was there for the taking. Still, road point isn't the end of the world, and we have yet to taste defeat. I'll take that.
Lyndon - some chatter (from myself and a couple of others) for the Evertonia Live Forum. If that is cumbersome or not in the cards, maybe a game day thread? This way folks watching the game can comment, hit refresh, and see what fellow Blues are seeing and saying.
We're towards the top of the table. Stay up there until new ownership is found.
I like this squad. I see no loafers or prima donnas. Hard working group worthy of Liverpool's people and culture.

In one way it's a another good point and we are now 5th in the table but it could have easily been a win.
Mistakes in defence and missed chances are all part of the game it's what divides the top teams from the bottom.
The plus is we will get better, if we can keep the players fit.

Jeff Armstrong.
If you do the maths.. 4 million for a right Back ( when we needed serious quality !), who is not far off thirty.
add another thirty - something, to the already creaking Ship, who we paid 7 million for, yet, hasnt kicked a ball in the PL for us yet!
Now, that to some people may equate to some Canny Business by the Scot, but to me it seems like a load of Pure Bollox.
Last Season our team imploded in the last 7 games and it was all down to Moyes.
instead of consolidating, to improve and give the fans hope for any European spot, this master tactician decides to Splurge 11/12 million on two players.
I mean, this IS the. Premier League.. which Club does anything like that?
He may have been Canny in the disastrous Summer Transfer window, but he Canny win FA with us.
He canny get a team selection right and he canny manage a game and choose the right substitutions at the right time.
The Team he ended with today is the team that he should have started with.
Grealish and Johnson should have been hauled off at half time and Barry around 60 minutes.
Grealish was woeful from the start and should have really been gone, by the half hour mark.
although Im extremely grateful for our position in the table at the moment, I cant help thinking that its hanging by a thread and there are a couple of shockers and reality checks, right around the corner.
A quick Sale and a quick change of Manager wouldnt be a bad thing.
with a quick sale we might have funds for the January Transfer Window, as if the situation remains the same, we might have to sell to buy.
A big shoutout to KDH for Todays performance. Barry took his goal very well.
I thought Tyrique George was too deep at times and Dibling showed Moyes what a fake he is, by keeping Grealish on, for as long as he should have.

Keane starts, we concede two.
We STILL dont sign a proper right-back, two goals come through him.
Out of Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Nathan Patterson, Jake OBrien and Merlin Rohl, who is the best right-back? Some serious debate to be had at the least and Id fancy my chances of arguing that its Patterson.
Mykolenko injured; if only we had a promising young attacking left-back who could come into the side.
We signed two central midfielders in the summer, neither started and our central midfield is easily the strongest part of our team.
The transfer window this summer has to be one of the worst pieces of ‘club management that even weve seen in a long time. Today it cost us two points, and it will continue to cost us points for the rest of the season.

Mike Allison
We do possess a promising young left Back.. his name is Adam Aznou.
But, Due to our overblown Squad, we decided to loan him out to Malaga !
obviously a decision sanctioned by our 21st Century Technical Genius, The Moyesiah!

A game that showed what we are. An upper midtable team that creats chances and misses too many of them. A team that gives the ball away too much. A team that loses concentration too easily, too often.
For all that, a team that stuck at it, despite a disjointed performance.
I'll mark Moyes down for leaving Hackney on the bench, picking Keane and shunting Branthwaite to left back instead of Garner.
Still unbeaten with much to like and an equal number of flaws.

Mainland-Niles, is a decent footballer, but I personally dont believe he his a natural right back, and I think it showed today.
The first half was poor, the second wasnt much better until Hull scored, then Everton suddenly started playing with a lot more purpose and then the game suddenly became a lot more enjoyable to watch from an Evertonian perspective.
We do give the ball away stupidly, before the first Hull goal, Tarkowski, has tried to volley a forward pass like hes a top midfielder, instead of getting his body across and keeping it a lot more simple and before the second goal, Harrison Armstrong, gave away good possession way to cheaply, when he telegraphed a pass out wide.
Hull still had a lot to do for both goals, with Niles, unfortunately lacking concentration, when he gave away possession for their first goal, and then stupidly trying to be too clever (definitely trying something that a midfielder, rather than a natural defender would try) and also giving away possession for their second goal.
We have a good spirit, a good togetherness, we are still unbeaten, so lets move on to the Chelsea game next Saturday.

Also, can anyone help me out with my thoughts about the disallowed Everton goal. I initially thought Johnson, was offside and had no problem with this decision, but Ive looked again and think his feet are on line with the keepers trailing leg.
I dont think Ive ever seen a referee go to the monitor to check if a goal is offside before, simply because I thought they had better technology in the VAR studio, and this is where offside decisions are usually made?
I must be wrong, but its definitely got me thinking.
11/10/2026 21:51:30
Tony - I didn't think he was offside!
I need an explanation as well.

Thought Keane was o.k. today, certainly not at fault for the goals. But you do not play your best central defender (and player?) out of position at any cost. Possibly the worst game I've seen Jarred play.
Still should have won comfortably in my opinion.

AMN was awful, he lacks concentration, I suppose thats all £4 million will get you. I believe JOB will be at right back next Saturday. Lets hope Myko is fit and get Jarrad back in the middle.
Barry missed a hat trick of chances at Bournemouth and the same today, at least he didnt miss four chances, hes scoring fairly consistently and the upside is hes consistently getting into goal scoring positions, so if hes scoring 1/4 chances then so be it, hes our only option.
