Danny O'Neill, Rest In Peace

As most reading this will now know, Danny O’Neill, whose name will be familiar from both these pages and ToffeeWeb, has sadly died.
Brent Stephens, another TW regular, sent this message with the news which I share here:
"I’m sad to say that his brother, Jamie, has contacted me to inform me that Danny has passed away after a long illness.
"I know that some of you were good friends of Danny, often meeting up at matches home and away, although like me you might have lost contact more recently. Danny will be remembered as a regular contributor to Everton forums, including writing various articles himself.
"I first met Danny at an away match at Wolves a few years ago - I think he had not long been out of the army after a long and successful army career. I sometimes managed to get away game tickets for Danny and we met at many of the matches, home and away. Danny himself seemed to conjure up tickets for many of those matches – a legacy perhaps of his army intelligence work?!
"Danny was especially good to me when my wife died in early 2025, for which I’ll forever be grateful. Thank you, Danny.
"I understand that the funeral will be held in South Liverpool. Details yet to be announced.
"My condolences to brother Jamie, son Connor, and the rest of the family.
"Rest in peace, Danny."

Jesus Christ, what a dreadful, dreadful shock. Danny, your name is etched in my heart for the wonderful Evertonian you are. Your love of this wonderful club is a shinning beacon to everyone of us. The passion, the love, the optimism and sheer bloody willpower that drove you, week in and week out, my God.. you have often shamed us all with your love for all things blue and I for one will feel I have lost a friend. I am a regular browser and a very rare poster but what desperately sad news about Danny
One of the posters I will scroll through a thread and always stop to read their post (Mike G, Christine, Sam H, Lyndon, Robert take a bow). I loved his match reports.
He will sit in the Pantheon alongside the likes of Harold Matthews who I still miss years later having never had the privilege to meet either of them in person.

What terribly sad news. Danny meant so much to so many of us, despite never meeting him. I loved to read his contributions, both here and in the other place. Danny's relentless positivity for all things Everton was quite infectious. He will be greatly missed.

If you built a blueprint for the ultimate fan, you'd get Danny, always positive, always committed, both on these sites and by the way he followed the club home and away, through thick and thin.
A breathe of fresh air, he seemed like a guy who's company you'd never get sick of being in.
When we finally win something, something you never doubted would happen, I will think of you. RIP!

Almost to the end, Danny was submitting articles for consideration at Evertonia. The majority of them were unfinished and a couple were predicated on things that didn’t end up happening so they didn’t end up being published, but it would surprise no one that they were all about Everton’s future and they were all typically optimistic.
I never met him but that seemed to be his nature. My condolences to his friends and family. He’ll be greatly missed, I’m sure.

I too never met Danny, but I loved his contributions to these pages and Toffee Web. A wonderful Evertonian, who took you on a journey every time he submitted a match report. Sadly I had no idea he was ill, and it's now too late to send him my best wishes, but I truly hope he rests in peace. He will be missed by those who remember his articles, and maybe it's not too late to send him a very big thank you.

Very sad news. A proper gentleman and a proper fan. He never gave any indication he was ill but I did notice he was never quite the same after his wife (who clearly meant the world to him) passed away recently. It was Danny and few others who made Toffeeweb worth reading with his enthusiasm and optimism. I remember feeling quite star struck when he responded to one of my first posts. Very, very sad. Hopefully his beloved blues will do him proud this season.

Such sad news. Like the best people on social media, Danny was the friend I never met. I always looked out for his articles, match reports and travelogues, which made you feel like you were living everything with him.

The passing of Danny O’Neill announced by his friends on ToffeeWeb has come as such a massive blow.
Like many others I never met or knew Danny but through his support of Everton and numerous articles it seemed like I did. His dedication/enthusiasm/passion for Everton shone through in all his writing …sometimes astute, often funny and always optimistic.
I know Danny did most of his writing on ToffeeWeb but the vast majority was when Lyndon was there so I feel it is warranted that all associated with Evertonia have the opportunity to express our sadness too.
Perhaps in future, at the end of each season a trophy could be considered in Danny’s name for the most passionate/enjoyable article. 'The Danny O’Neill award' would be a fitting tribute to a man who has shown year after year through his writing his unbending support and love for our Club.
RIP Danny you will be missed by many.

So sorry to hear about Danny. A great Evertonian and a genuine person. His contribution was always uniquely positive and he did love Everton.So soon after his wife passing who made one unforgettable contribution. So sad for the family. My deepest condolences.

This hurts.
It's almost too sad for words, but it's not as Danny would most likely have said. For someone I never met, I only had his number, this awful loss feels personal. There is a big hole now where Danny once was and the thought of him posting no longer, travelling long distances to watch his beloved blues at all hours and conditions no longer, spending time in his city no longer, will take a little while to process.
The many times I read his reports where the match was sometimes incidental was one of the things I most looked forward to one the old site. I loved his encounters with opposing fans; the physical topography of the pubs and other landmarks that made things real; the people, always the people, and I know how many toffeewebbers and Evertonians (Lyndon?) who were lucky enough to know Danny are hurting right now.
Dear Sheedy, Danny’s enthusiasm was relentless. It made me tired at times. It was almost childlike in nice ways with wonder and optimism that was infectious. His eternal belief that we would be back where we belong, even in twelve months!
There were things that we did not agree on, but never footy/Everton. Danny was always courteous to a fault. I really respected him. He made a difference. His love for his club and city knew no bounds. He also served his country and saw things that all of us hope never to see.
Many deep condolences to Danny’s family and friends, including the many on both sites who knew him personally. And special thoughts for Danny's lad Connor whose life has been turned upside down in a couple of years and his sister, whose name - sorry - I don't know.
RIP Blue-boy.

It's an understatement to claim that his death is a deep loss to the Everton family, just two years since the demise of his beloved wife. I was fortunate to have met Danny at Goodison and to have exchanged emails with him for several years. Like his other pals, I was impressed by his unwavering optimism and love of all things blue – especially Kevin Sheedy. Captain O’Neill was one of us. Elizabeth and I extend our heartfelt condolences to his son.

I never met Danny, unfortunately, we just swapped a few messages and were friends on social media, but I'm deeply saddened by his passing.
He'll be forever remembered as the most enthusiastic and optimistic Evertonian of us all.
I really wish I'd got to meet him, RIP Danny and condolences to his family and friends.

This is dreadfully sad news. Always an optimist, never flustered or personal in his responses, he seemed to be a genntleman and an avid supporter of the blues. I never met him but conversed via comments many, many times. Seemed like a very interesting man who would be great to have a pint with. Rest in Peace fellow blue.
