Everton's second pre-season outing ended in a 1-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers as David Moyes's players got more minutes under their belt in preparation for the new Premier League campaign.

Iliman Ndiaye and Idrissa Gueye made their first appearances of the summer after returning from extended breaks due to international commitments with Senegal while new signing Mark Travers made his first non-competitive appearance for the club.

The new signing from Bournemouth made two important saves to prevent Rovers from earning a more convincing victory, clawing a direct free-kick wide and then denying Dion de Neve a second goal late on.

The Belgian had put the hosts ahead as early as the seventh minute, finsihing off a sweeping move down Everton's left flank and it would prove to be the game's only goal.

Gueye and Charlie Alcaraz had efforts for the visitors in the first half while Beto and Ndiaye were foiled in the second but in the main there was very little end product from the Toffees.

Everton: Travers, Patterson (Keane 59'), O'Brien, Branthwaite, Mykolenko, Gueye (Armstrong 59'), Garner, McNeil (Metcalfe 79'), Ndiaye (Heath 59'), Alcaraz (Clarke 70'), Beto (Chermiti 70')

Subs not used: Tyrer, Finney, Thomas, Iroegbunam, Onyango
